Finch Bird Feeders Why does a finch not eat the milo in my bird feeder?

Question by kevin burkhalter: Why does a finch not eat the milo in my bird feeder?

Best answer:

Answer by Jessie
I’m going to take this question seriously, and hoping you are talking about the seed. If you are talking about the seed, because it is poor nutritional value, and the bird may be lacking in some nutritional areas. Not many birds will eat milo seeds.

Love Birds Is it possible for my love birds to catch kennel cough?

Question by Rain W: Is it possible for my love birds to catch kennel cough?
We decided to adopt a 1.5yr old cocker spaniel/poodle(cockerpoo) from the local animal shelter. His owner brought him in the day before. The animal shelter requires a ten day waiting period before you can take him home.During one of our visits with him, we realized he was coughing and sneezing. The staff informed us that he has developed kennel cough from other dogs and/or cats in the kennel. And that a trip to the vet and given meds he would be fine in a few weeks. Also to keep him away from other dogs and cats until he is better. I know that kennel cough is an airborn virus, which is how he caught it. BUT are dogs and cats the only animals who could catch this? I have a pair of love birds at home. Are they safe from kennel cough?

cat on baby bird watch

A few nice baby birds images I found:

cat on baby bird watch
baby birds

Angel has taken our former cat, Jerky, place at baby bird watch. This is a rite of spring. The sparrows make a next under the eaves of the roof every year, and every year one of our cats is on patrol, waiting for the baby bird to fall out, as it always seems to do, and then the cat will swoop down and gobble it up. Well, Jerky left us one day, just up and left. I think getting the dog just pushed him over the edge. First we brought home a couple of cats, then a dog?! That was just too much. Anyway, so now Angel is waiting patiently for her food to drop. Storm is also on watch, from the behind the bushes. I just pruned the palm, (after this photo was taken) so it’s a bit more exposed, but the dead palm fans needed to go.

Bird Feeders How do I keep squirrels from getting into my bird feeders?

Question by Bradicus: How do I keep squirrels from getting into my bird feeders?
Hey people, I need help.We have a rod iron pole to hang bird feeders on and the squirrels keep getting into them. Do you know any ways to stop this?

Best answer:

Answer by bumblebee
Squirrels get hungry too,and they don’t know the feed is just for the birds. I always leave seed and peanuts for the squirrels and they leave the bird feeders alone.
It’s a lost cause trying to just feed the birds.

All About Birds Q&A: I know that all birds have adapted through natural selection, but is there something specific about the finch?

Question by Zolyshka: I know that all birds have adapted through natural selection, but is there something specific about the finch?
I know that all birds have adapted through natural selection, but is there something specific about the finch that caught your attention?

Best answer:

Answer by jcatfood
Finches are special because they are an example of an adaptive radiation. Charles Darwin, David Lack and Peter and Rosemary Grant and other scientists have done a lot of work on how environmental factors cause evolution, speciation and diversification. Finches in the Galapagos island just happen to be far enough removed from the mainland that once they found the islands, they became genetically isolated and adapted to their island habitats.

There are lots of other groups like finches, such as the honeycreepers in Hawaii. The reasons finches are singled out is because they were the first example found.

Day 49

Best seen… Medium sized :)

Today I drove for the first time alone… Well actually that is not stricktly true, but today was the first time I really felt like I was driving on my own! I actually got my license years ago, but have never needed to have a car. Now that I have moved to the US I need to drive. I have been re-learning and practicing for a while now, mostly with my partner by my side but today I felt like I was driving for me. Alone in the car, with music on. For the first time it felt like freedom (not a learning chore). Yay for freedom! Yay for me.

I love the bright colours on this. Not the most flattering selfie, I grant you… but self-portraiture for me is about revealing the different sides of who I am and what I feel (not merely for looking good). Sure if I were a photogenic beauty, I might say otherwise…

Finch Bird Feeders Q&A: Bird feeders and seed?

Question by christigmc: Bird feeders and seed?
I’m growing a vegetable garden and for insect control I’m trying to attract birds to my back yard. I have a wooden and glass bird feeder but I don’t think it’s enough. I’ve heard about all those kids projects like using bread and peanut butter or lard but are there ways to make bird feeders that don’t look so child like?
Also what type of bird seed should I use? I found 2 kinds at the store. One is sunflower seeds. The other it says finch food it’s a bunch of tiny seeds.

Best answer:

Answer by Dr. Strangelove
Bird feeders come in hundreds of shapes and sizes. I would start with a cheaper model and see what the birds prefer.
As far as seeds go, I found that black oil seeds attract the most birds to my feeders. I think they are a type of sunflower seed. I buy mine in Wal-mart

Chromed Bird Why does Angry Birds run so slow on my Macbook?

Question by : Why does Angry Birds run so slow on my Macbook?
I just started playing Angry Birds yesterday on my Macbook, and it is very slow, though not to the point of being downright unplayable. I’ve been playing it on Firefox, which the site even asked me to upgrade, but the version I’m playing is called Angry Birds Chrome.

Could it be that I’m playing the wrong version on the wrong system? If not, what could I be doing wrong here?

Best answer:

Answer by Flat Kat
The reason is because angry birds is meant for iphone, itouch, ipad & so on. It is not made for the software of a computer. I had the same problem as you &the best way to get angry birds is on an ipad2.

Birdfeeders How can I attract tanagers and orioles to my birdfeeders (Oklahoma)?

Question by nopeeking: How can I attract tanagers and orioles to my birdfeeders (Oklahoma)?
I know that orioles like oranges, so I’ve put out a half section of orange just today. I have no idea what tanagers like to eat, or even if they would visit a birdfeeder. Any suggestions?

Best answer:

Answer by ms bell
Tanagers love suet, so I highly recommend putting some outside for them to eat. Tangers also enjoy eating fruit, so you can put out some for them. Their favorites are grapes and cherries. Cherry trees and grape vines also attract tanagers. If you aleady have those in your yard, you’ll be seeing many tanagers. You also want to have a bird bath or some water source for the tanagers so they can drink and bathe.

Orioles like apples and bananas, too.

Happy birdwatching!

Pigeons How do you get rid of pigeons who have decided to nest in front of your condo?

Question by HT: How do you get rid of pigeons who have decided to nest in front of your condo?
My neighbors have let some pigeons nest and lay eggs in front of their front door (which is directly across from my front door because I’m in a condo). They are even feeding the pigeons. We get attacked by the pigeons flying around every time we step out our front door. How do you recommend getting rid of them. I’ve thought about asking my neighbor to move the nest to their back porch – will the pigeons find the nest if it is moved?

Baby Birds What is the white stuff that baby birds give to their mothers?

Question by : What is the white stuff that baby birds give to their mothers?
We have a little nesting house hanging outside our window, and we notice that the baby birds inside periodically give the mother bird something after she gives them a worm, or other animal. It’s white, looks a bit like a small egg, and is oval-shaped. Does anyone know what this is?

The species of birds are wrens of some kind, if that is necessary.

Best answer:

The parent will remove the poop of the baby birds and sometimes it looks like a ball or egg shape. Keeps the nest cleaner.

Bird Feeder Poles How do I keep squirrels out of myh bird feeder?

Question by knitzippy: How do I keep squirrels out of myh bird feeder?
This is a wire “squirrel-proof” feeder. The squirrels climb out on the narrow metal pole holding the feeder up. I don’t have a tree branch for the feeder to hang directly from. Any advice? Thanks!!

Best answer:

Answer by MountainGoat
Keep a dog in your yard
Or
put a plastic cone on the narrow pole (The kind you put on your dog or cat when it goes to the vet). Make sure the narrow end of the cone is toward the feeder.
Or
You can get a squirrel trap and trap it using peanut butter or apple cores.
Or
You can shoot the squirrel with a BB gun. Just make sure you get at least a .22 BB gun to make sure you kill it. Also, in most cases, rifles are more accurate than pistols.
