Finch Bird Feeders Question about bird feeders...?

Question by Calvin-Thinking With Portals: Question about bird feeders…?
So, on Friday-ish I refilled my bird feeder about 3/4 of the way on both sides, and mind you, it’s fairly large(it’s divided into two so you can put in 2 different types of seed) because birds weren’t really visiting my feeder(turns out the seed had kind of “solidified” from growing roots and they were all stuck together).
Well, I got an explosion of bird visiting my feeder, beautiful birds, Gold Finches, Lesser Goldfinches, Sparrows, Finches, and even this poor one eyed bird. Well, today they finished the thistle section almost entirely. The other half is almost empty as well.

I told my dad about this and he told me that I shouldn’t fill the feeder in the summer/spring as there is already a lot to eat and that I should fill it during the winter and fall when they need it the most. He also says if I continue to do this, the birds will grow too reliant on me and “forget”, essentially, how to forage, so if we move, they’re screwed(and moving is a looming possibility in the future).

I’m debating on what to do. I love watching the birds(as the feeder is just outside my window), and they’re so beautiful and they sing so nicely. Plus, their personalities are awesome and I record the birds I see on eBird.com.

So…what should I do? Should I follow my dad’s advice? Should I continue to fill my feeder? Or should I just once a month fill it and let the birds eat away at it and in the colder season keep it filled? Or something else?
Thanks!

Best answer:

Answer by sydney :)
we keep ours filled all year, as the birds dont just eat at one time of year. We are moving too, but we are telling the person that move into our house to put feeders up..and they wont forget how to forage. Birds often live in groups, and if they are loners, they will remeber quickly.

What do you think? Answer below!

Lovebirds How do you know that your lovebirds gonna lay eggs?

Question by : How do you know that your lovebirds gonna lay eggs?
I have a couple of lovebirds and they cuddle, scratch each others hairs. Yesterday morning my female lovebird seemed to be little bulky and stays quiet. And yeah we made a nest box for her and she stays a while inside that. And she is unable to move as if somethings paining. What should i assume?

Best answer:

Answer by Kaushik
Place a small bird home inside your cage like a mud pot and put some dry grass and sticks inside the cage if it builds a nest using them inside the house then its gonna do it. :-)

Baby Birds Q&A: What is the best thing to do for baby birds once they fall from their nests?

Question by appalachian_panther: What is the best thing to do for baby birds once they fall from their nests?
We have a large spruce tree in our yard and each spring many brids build nests in it. There is also a nest of baby birds on the front porch. From many years of living here I know that soon enough the baby birds jump, fall or get pushed from the nest. Some survive. Some don’t. I cannot take care of all these birds as well as its mother. What is the best thing to do for the babies so that nature can take its best course?

Best answer:

Answer by Mitch <---ME!
Don’t touch teh babys. The mother will come back. If you already have touched them, it is possible shes giong to abandon them now. Don’t touch the nest either. But in the case where you haev to, gently place them in there nest and teh mother should come back.

Buy Birds I want to know where I can buy pet birds other than pet stores?

Question by : I want to know where I can buy pet birds other than pet stores?
I was wanting to buy a bird like a parakeet. Also preferably hand trained or at leased close. A baby would be best. Close to or in Sarasota FL Bradenton thank you.
Be specific please.

Best answer:

Answer by petunia13
local breeders, also, try your local animal rescue shelters, sometimes they have these type of birds in.

i cannot be more specific as i live in the uk, you can google your local pet rescue centres and your local parakeet breeders, type in something like “local parakeet breeders in (what area you are or your postcode/zip code)”, you should get some leads from this.

Bird Identification Can you help me with an Ohio Bird identification?

Question by librarylover: Can you help me with an Ohio Bird identification?
This bird is found in western southwestern Ohio. It builds its nest in fields (for example, a hay field). It is about the size of a robin. It is mainly black with a light yellow underbelly. It also dives at vehicles and people quite often ~ probably because we’re getting too near its nest.

Thorn Birds Q&A: Does anyone out there think that "Thorn Birds" involves pedophilia?

Question by NinaPina: Does anyone out there think that “Thorn Birds” involves pedophilia?
I have been watching the mini series ‘The Thorn Birds”. I thought it would be about love. However, from the first couple of hours, I am getting the feeling that Father Ralph is really a pedophile. He spends way to much time with Meggie, allows her to sleep in the next room at the rectory, Mary is jealous of the relationship, and people are beginning to talk. Has anyone who has seen the series agree? I would appreciate your thoughts.

Best answer:

Answer by Couman
You can read a summary on Wikipedia if you want (be warned, it’s actually rather detailed an spoiler-filled.) But to answer your question, they do have a (rather tragic) sexual relationship but not until she’s an adult.

Birds How do birds know when to return to the north for mating season?

birds
by axelkr

Question by soulful thinker: How do birds know when to return to the north for mating season?
I am asking this question for my husband. He wants to know how a bird that flys south for the winter knows when to fly north for mating season.

Example: the Red Breasted Robin flys south for the winter months and then returns north in the early springtime to nest.

What instincts, or what in nature tells the birds to return to the north?

We both thank you for any and all answers in advance.

Best answer:

Answer by natureutt78
There are both “proximate” and “ultimate” causes to why a bird migrates. It can deal with shortening or lengthing of daylight, food supply, celestial cues (stars), hormones, etc. I added some links that will hopefully help you two understand migration a bit more.

What do you think? Answer below!

All About Birds Is there a reason why flocks of birds all decide to head to the same tree, sometimes?

Question by Maureen: Is there a reason why flocks of birds all decide to head to the same tree, sometimes?
I just saw about 25 birds all fly in a flock to one tree. Then, a few seconds later, another 25 headed to the same tree. Then, more. And, more. There must have been 300 birds on that one tree. All just sitting there on the tree.

Then more came & headed to a neighboring tree.

They weren’t all pecking at the bark to get insects or picking at fruit on the tree. They were just sitting there.

Do ornithologists have theories on why birds do this?

Best answer:

Answer by tanner1919
They were most likely all the same species, and either european starlings, or common pigeon, depending on your location…
Birds flock for several reasons:
Safety in numbers (reduced predation)
Maintain social bonds
Keeping potential mates within reach
And possibly even aerodynamic advantages, that reduce the effort of flying (in species like ducks, geese, cranes, etc..)

Bird Feeding Will the color of a bird feeder influence the number of birds feeding?

Question by JOHN B: Will the color of a bird feeder influence the number of birds feeding?
My daughter is trying this as a science experiment for school. I am looking for a hypothesis.

Best answer:

Answer by Karen C
Probably not, but it’s an interesting notion.

Hypothisis: All other factors being the same, more birds will feed at a (insert color here) feeder.

Be sure to control for other factors that affect feeder choice…food, wind direction, distance from cover, and probably a bunch of others that I haven’t thought of.

Science fair judges don’t care whether the hypothesis is correct, they just care that it exists.
