All About Birds Is there a reason why flocks of birds all decide to head to the same tree, sometimes?

Question by Maureen: Is there a reason why flocks of birds all decide to head to the same tree, sometimes?
I just saw about 25 birds all fly in a flock to one tree. Then, a few seconds later, another 25 headed to the same tree. Then, more. And, more. There must have been 300 birds on that one tree. All just sitting there on the tree.

Then more came & headed to a neighboring tree.

They weren’t all pecking at the bark to get insects or picking at fruit on the tree. They were just sitting there.

Do ornithologists have theories on why birds do this?

They were most likely all the same species, and either european starlings, or common pigeon, depending on your location…
Birds flock for several reasons:
Safety in numbers (reduced predation)
Maintain social bonds
Keeping potential mates within reach
And possibly even aerodynamic advantages, that reduce the effort of flying (in species like ducks, geese, cranes, etc..)
