Birding What lenses would be the best for birding?

by barron

Question by Kim W: What lenses would be the best for birding?
I have a nikon d 60. I know a 300 lense with no vibration is dealer suggested but are there better options with comparable costs? Or do you have to get a nikon brand? We are new to birding and I am not ready to sink a grand into a lense. I have heard of a 380 lense but forgot the name of it and cost. Would it be better and how?

Need help with bird call identification.
There are two different birds making two different calls here. I am not sure if they are of the same species just making two different types of calls, or if they are different species of bird entirely. One is easier to hear than the other.
This was taken at Black River Riparian Forest in Renton, Wa.

Birds Of Prey What are the birds of prey I often see flying above the M40 near the Stokenchurch Gap ?

Question by : What are the birds of prey I often see flying above the M40 near the Stokenchurch Gap ?
Above the gap, on the eastern side, a look above will usually show dozens of birds of prey flying around, with a V shaped tail. Anyone any idea what these are, and why they congregate there ?

Meads.

Best answer:

Answer by wacky
They are ” Red Kites.”

Some one could be feeding them or there is a good source of food ,they are “scavengers”and only eat “dead” food they “do not” kill, as was once believed.

Lucky you, where I live they are breeding but alas I have only seen 4-6 of them at one time.

Bird Houses Q&A: What type of bird houses are good for San Diego County?

Question by Naamah: What type of bird houses are good for San Diego County?
We live in San Diego county, inland, and would like to put several birdhouses in our yard for local birds to use. However, we know there are a lot of sizes and types of bird houses for different species – what would be the best to put up in our area? I’ve mostly seen scrub jays and sparrows, but I’m no birder, and I want to make my yard a good nesting place for all types.

(Also, what type of feed should I put out?)

Best answer:

Answer by wasting time here
in diego I’d check out for the swallows that hit capistrono.. dont worry about the food the’ll pick thought it but all birds love sunflower seeds so get wild bird seed and mix 50/50 with sun flower..

At the Owl Fest we saw two different Bald Eagles.
They are amazing to see up close!! ~

Bald Eagle
Wikipedia~

The Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) is a bird of prey found in North America that is most recognizable as the national bird and symbol of the United States of America. This sea eagle has two known sub-species and forms a species pair with the White-tailed Eagle. Its range includes most of Canada and Alaska, all of the contiguous United States, and northern Mexico. It is found near large bodies of open water with an abundant food supply and old-growth trees for nesting.

The Bald Eagle is a large bird, with a body length of 70–102 centimeters (28–40 in), a wingspan of up to 2.44 m (96 in), and a mass of 2.5–7 kilograms (5.5–15 lb); females are about 25 percent larger than males. The adult Bald Eagle has a brown body with a white head and tail, and bright yellow irises, taloned feet, and a hooked beak; juveniles are completely brown except for the yellow feet. Males and females are identical in plumage coloration. Its diet consists mainly of fish, but it is an opportunistic feeder. It hunts fish by swooping down and snatching the fish out of the water with its talons. It is sexually mature at four years or five years of age. In the wild, Bald Eagles can live up to thirty years, and often survive longer in captivity. The Bald Eagle builds the largest nest of any North American bird, up to 4 meters (13 ft) deep, 2.5 meters (8.2 ft) wide, and one tonne (1.1 tons) in weight.

The species was on the brink of extinction in the continental United States (while flourishing in much of Alaska and Canada) late in the 20th century, but now has a stable population and has been officially removed from the U.S. federal government’s list of endangered species. The Bald Eagle was officially reclassified from "Endangered" to "Threatened" on July 12, 1995 by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service. On July 6, 1999, a proposal was initiated "To Remove the Bald Eagle in the Lower 48 States From the List of Endangered and Threatened Wildlife." It was de-listed on June 28, 2007.

Parrots parrots???

Question by josh: parrots???
whts the average cost for a normal parrot i dont want a fancy one just regular looking as long as i have one?…and are the parrots that are red yellow and blue like the costa rican parrot .. how much can they cost?

Best answer:

Answer by mytielz
I think you need to do some research on the different species and decide which one you would like and would suit you. There are too many different parrots to answer such a broad general question. You will also need to consider the cost of a cage and accessories and food and vet.

were should I hang bird houses at my house?

Question by Becky: were should I hang bird houses at my house?
I have a few bird houses to hang in my yard. My questions are: How far from bird feeders and bird baths should I hang the houses? Should I put any kind of bedding as a starter in the houses? I live in Michigan, so most of the birds that would nest in these houses are common finches and maybe other small birds. Thanks. Add any usefull tips if you can think of anything else.
Best answer:
Answer by hermsters
Put the houses as far away from the feeders as you can. Too close and the other birds could hassle the young in their nests. As far as bedding goes, the birds will do that themselves. It’s all part of the process.

Bird Table Q&A: Is there a way to keep pigeons out of our bird table?

Question by ravenclawdragon: Is there a way to keep pigeons out of our bird table?
We have a bird table in our backyard to feed the robins. But this black feathered pigeon keeps getting on to it and eating the seed. So my dad, had cut the roof holders down by half as well as wrapping robe around the table itself, the bird still gets on.

And I’m sick of getting rid of it. So is there a way, to stop this annoying bird from getting on the table, also I don’t want to kill it as the bird has a mate.

put some poultry wire with just one larger hole but not large enough for the pigeon

How do I take a picture of a flying bird?

Question by Jam: How do I take a picture of a flying bird?
Hello, I use a Canon camera. The powershot sd1000 7.1 mega pix. It is really good I love it! I love to take pictures of animals like my pet bird. I don’t use flash because I don’t want to blind my bird. But when I take a picture of him flying it will be blurry! And if i do use flash it will take a second for the camera to take the picture, and my bird would have stopped flying by then. What should I do? I am not good at photograhpy :)

Best answer:

Answer by succubus
i’m not an expert, but i would use the Tv mode on the camera (shutter speed priority) and select a very fast shutter speed so the camera thingy won’t be open too much and take the bird in too many positions, that’s why it’s blurry.
i believe you also have a kids&pets preset mode on your camera, try and use that one too

bird seed?

Question by Sara S: bird seed?
my parakeet likes the vacuum. he has made the wonderful discovery that if he throws seed all over (i mean ALL OVER!) the room, i come to vacuum it. it is not that he is board, he has plenty of toys. how can i stop him!?!?!?!?!!!?!????!!?!?!?

Best answer:

Answer by crazy24hr
If the floor is not carpeted use a broom to sweep up the seed. It may be that he wants you around. i know it’s difficult to sweep carpet too but if it makes them stop tossing it I might try that too. The only other thing might be to get a covered food dish that may keep him from throwing it around too. They may have one at the local pet store.

What happens to the wild birds in forest fires?

Question by : What happens to the wild birds in forest fires?
The Georgia/Florida fires just north of us are raging. The Osceola Forest is now burning. This morning, I find a beautiful pileated woodpecker in the trees outside my office window. I usually don’t see them around here. He is about 19 inches in length and is a treat to watch because the trees here are shorter around here.
Do the birds usually flee in a certain direction? I am just a beginner bird watcher, so I am not familiar with bird behavior during extreme weather conditions and forest fires.
Thanks in advance for your input.
I am NOT thinking of starting one, we already have ONE.
I just wondered if birds flee in certain directions or if they follow the flow of smoke.
It is a behavioral question that I thought birders more experienced than I could answer.
Reports are coming in about the birds here in Florida. The smoke has disorientated them. My poor little feathered friends. :( (

What monopod/tripod would you recommend for taking pictures of birds?

Question by Petaluma S: What monopod/tripod would you recommend for taking pictures of birds?
I recently began taking pictures of birds. My actual tripod is a cheap one with at least three knobs to adjust its head. I think there are monopods/tripods that are easier/faster for head adjustment. The camera I’m using is a Nikon D50 with an 18-55 mm lens or a 70-300 mm lens so I don’t necessarily need a strong tripod… just a monopod or tripod that can be easily brought in non accessible and muddy areas and that can be quickly adjusted. Experienced bird photographers, what do you suggest?

Q&A: How is the best way to stop other birds from building nests in my Blue Bird Houses?

Question by bob a: How is the best way to stop other birds from building nests in my Blue Bird Houses?
I have a guard on my bird houses but other birds still get their small sticks in the houses.
Best answer:
Answer by momtoangel
At the beginning of the nesting season, keep an eye on what type of nest is being built in your blue bird house. If it’s “neat”, that’s a blue bird. If it’s a sloppy nest, it’s probably a sparrow. If you don’t want sparrows to build, just pull the nest out on a daily basis. There is nothing you can do to “prevent” sparrows from building, you can just discourage them at the beginning of the nest building season. If there are eggs in a well-built nest, please don’t throw them away – it’s just a fact of life that sometimes we will get other birds building and nesting in our blue bird houses. Personally, I feel that whomever gets their first, gets the box (as I have about 20 of them!) Good luck!
