Finch Bird Feeders Need some help identifying neighborhood birds?

Question by Ram.k: Need some help identifying neighborhood birds?
there are black birds in the wetland areas with red spots under the wing
a large greyish bird with a sad slow cooing chirpnested on our magnolia for thepast 3yrs
we do have a lot of robins around and i think sparrows too all over
there are also these small gold bodied birds with a black head and wings
Also i think i see a cardinal in our pines but is its mate the dull brown bird next to it?
what species of hawk can be found in mid michigan, i sometimes see it soaring above.
what can i seeds can i feed and in what bird feeders to attract them closer and more types?

Best answer:

Answer by dadnbob
The first is probably a Red Wing Blackbird.
The second is probably a Mourning Dove.
You could have several different species of sparrows…..House, Chipping, Fox (or more)
The gold is a American Goldfinch.
Yes, the dull brown one next to the cardinal is probably his mate. Then tend to stay together year round….if you see one, you’ll see the other.
You can have a number of different hawks about.
Get yourself a small book of the birds to start with.
You can feed black oil sunflower seeds and white proso millet. In the winter a suet is good to have out.

Thistle Bird Feeder Q&A: What kind of bird food attracts the largest variety of bird species?

Question by Crazy Evy: What kind of bird food attracts the largest variety of bird species?
I live in Fort Pierre, South Dakota, and I’ve been fascinated by birds for as long as I can remember. Recently, my grandfather and I built two plastic-bottle birdfeeders. We don’t usually see a lot of blue jays, but they *do* live in the area. I want to attract as many different species as possible. Will standard mixed bird feed work, or is there anything special to attract specific birds in the area? A few examples of some of the birds that I want to attract are blue jays, robins, chipping sparrows, other sparrows, finches, doves, and common grackles (locally known as “blue-headed blackbirds”). It doesn’t have to be just those species, though.
Anyway, an answer would really be appreciated. Thanks for the help.

Answer by ron_skeee
Feeding will result in them no longer eating what nature provides them to eat. Bugs, and the bugs will then feed upon you.

Cockatiel Birds Q&A: Do you think it's safe for me to get a degu?

Question by Sarah: Do you think it’s safe for me to get a degu?
I’ve been considering getting another pet for a while and a degu seems to be a really good choice. The only problem is that I have a dog. My dog is very well behaved but does like to chase rabbits and squirrels outside. I also have two cockatiel birds that our out of their cage all the time. My dog never chases them, but he has been trained not to since he was a puppy. He is now three years old and I’m not sure it would be so easy to train him to leave the degu alone. Any advice?

Sorry to hear about your grandmother.

Try the link below for starters, but if you do a search for ‘New Hampshire Wildlife’, or ‘New Hampshire Dept of Natural Resources’, that should bring up a lot of links.

From there you can email these folks, or looks thru the site to see what types of birds are indigenous to that state.

They should blend in with the environment..if they are too brightly colored they may attract predators. Stick with something neutral..beige, green, pale blue or just plain unpainted wood.

I was so excited to see this Red-Tailed Hawk sitting on a branch of a tree next to Lorch Hall (near Tappan Street). It let me get right under him – which was great. But I realized that there was a squirrel on the tree across the walk. The Squirrel must be the absolutely bravest little guy on campus because he climed over to the tree where the hawk was and, essentially, got him to fly away! You can see him (albeit a bit blurry because he was a yard behind the hawk) climbing over to the bird. It was great to watch, and no one was lunch!

Birds Of Prey What are the diferences between falcons, hawks, and eagles?

Question by FoxStride: What are the diferences between falcons, hawks, and eagles?
I know that they are all birds of prey, what else distinguishes them from each other?
I would like to know for future references. :D

Best answer:

Answer by Audball (waiting and wishing)
Eagles and hawks are in the same family, Accipitridae, while falcons share only their class, Aves.

Eagles are the largest, with falcons as the smallest of the three and hawks in the middle. Eagles are relatively powerfully built, with a heavy head and bill. Falcons are built for high-speed diving, which is why they have thin, pointed wings. Hawks have the sharpest vision, with long tails and high intelligence.

I got a female and a male cockatiel from the pet shop last week. The guy who sold me the birds said Its okay to keep them together in the same cage. But a few days ago,I’ve found out that the male cockatiel attacks the female cockatiel. Is this normal? Or do I have to separate them?
And also,do you have any advices on taming my cockatiels?
I never had a bird before so I really need your help!

Baby Birds, House Sparrows, waiting to be fed

Some cool baby birds images:

Baby Birds, House Sparrows, waiting to be fed

There are 2 baby house sparrows waiting for Mom who is in the tree. See notes.

I have spent some time watching this group. The mother is always nearby but seems reluctant to do the feeding when I am within sight. The male carried a bug around in his mouth for 15-20 minutes and never did feed the babies. He did sit in the tree for a time and made a chattering noise and shook his wings.

There were three baby birds in the nest. One seems the more aggressive and pushes his head way out the opening. There is one other that manages to get its head partly way out the opening. I have not seen the third one in 3-4 days.

There is another female with this group who has gone in and out of the smaller nest to the left. But I don’t think there are any baby birds in that birdbox.
