North America bird identification, seems like it takes several bird books to find one type of bird. is there one good bird book.

“The National Geographic Field Guide to the Birds of North America, Fifth Edition”, by Jon L. Dunn and Jonathan Alderfer is one of the best and newest ones on the market. It has every species known of North American birds, with photos, range maps, and a quick-find index. This is the one book you’ll want to help you identify birds.
“Kaufman Field Guide to Birds of North America”, by Kenn Kaufman, and “The Sibley Guide to Birds” by David Allen Sibley, are also worth checking out.

Question by sumerluv: Help, my bird feeders have been taken over by squirrels. How can I keep them out?
One feeder is standing on a pole and up they climb to get to the feeder. Have already tried WD-40 and vaseline on the pole. Didn’t work. The other one is hanging from a branch in a tree and they climb the tree, walk on the branch and down the feeder to eat. Bird seed is costly and they are driving me nuts.
Thanks in advance.

Ah, one of the eternal frustrations of gardening. All I can tell you is that there are more than a few squirrel-busting devices available at most garden and feed stores; some work better than others.
Personally I prefer to just shoot the little vermin, but most people are nicer than that.

Question by Shaunie666: what is the minimum sized cage to keep 2 cockatiels?
I have 2 budgies and am planning to get 2 cockatiels (the budgies and cockatiels will be in separate cages). I was wondering what the minimum sized cage would be?
they will be let out of the cage through the whole day, its really only to keep them in during the night.
Best answer:
Answer by ms bell
20″ x 20″ x 26″ is the minimum size for two cockatiels, with no more than 3/4″ bar spacing. Bigger is always better, especially when you’re housing two or more cockatiels in the same cage. I’d recommend getting a larger cage that is 32″ x 23″ x 30″, so your cockatiels can move around, stretch out their wings, and be comfortable.

Last night I had a dream about a blue jay, it was perched on my shoulder, much like a parrot, and tilting its head towards me so it could hear what I was talking about. I don’t know anything about what I was talking about, but this blue jay was really interested in what I was saying. Someone was there with me, I don’t know who, though. What could it have meant?

Blue jays are aggressive birds that mimic others; I think you have a friend around you who may not be the best friend – may be mimicing you.

Question by Meggie858: Where can I find a website that has a large selection of bird calls?
We have been trying to figure out what type of raptor (a hawk or merlin of some type) lives across from our camp. The bird appears to have a white/brown underside, but we are sure it is not a red-tailed hawk. The call is not the same.
If anyone could let me know of any good websites that have a large supply of hawk call sound clips, that would be a huge help. Thank you!

Question by M: Is it possible to breed back an extinct species?
Provided its genes are passed on to representatives of another species.
Is it possible to breed back an animal that is – in terms of genetic makeup – IDENTICAL to its extinct ancestors?
There is so much fuss about rare animals going extinct. Why not have them breed with other species before their extinction, so that it will be possible to breed them back from extinction, should the need arise?
Best answer:
Answer by Floyd Pink
Yes, but not using the technique outlined by yourself. We would need actual samples of DNA from the now extinct species to have any hope of reviving them.

Question by JolteonCulie: What kind of noise does a bald eagle make?
Best answer:
Answer by CLEVE
Despite what television and movies would have you think, bald eagles are not responsible for the downward screaming noise so often attributed to them. Most people think the call of a red-tailed hawk is the sound a bald eagle makes.
Bald eagles make a series of sort of piping/whistling sounds that are often explosive and descend.
Here is quite possibly the best database of bird (and everything else) recordings available. It’s the Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s recording website via the Macaulay Library.

Do a search for bald eagle and you should get a whole slew of recordings!!

Question by stefano: What would be an appropriate bird cage for finches and cockatiels to share?
I need a bird cage atleast 30 x 30 x 60 or more for around $ 250 or less on amazon or in pet stores in florida.. I found one on amazon its; f050 bird cage. Would that be good enough for 2 cockatiels and 4 finches to share?
@!@!@!@!DETAILS PLEASE!@!@!@!@
Best answer:
Answer by Dani
You won’t like this, but there is no such thing as a good cage for cockatiels and finches to share, especially two cockatiels who might form a bond and become possessive of one another. Never mix birds that aren’t VERY similar in both size and temperament, and absolutely never mix a hookbill with a non hookbill. Never ever. Dead and maimed birds are usually the result, especially in such a small cage. Think you are the exception? So did I until my budgie lost a toe and another nearly lost her scalp and was blinded in one eye. Instead, invent in a second cage. Buying one second-hand should reduce your price. The birds would likely enjoy being housed next to each other, but not close enough that the cockatiels can reach through and nab toes. I am sorry to say that one cage would likely spell death for your cute little finches. Please be a responsible and loving pet owner and buy 2 cages.

Cool Facts
* The Fox Sparrow comes in four different forms, sometimes considered separate species. The red or eastern form has reddish streaks on chest and back, a rufous cap, and a gray face. It breeds across the boreal forest and winters in the southeastern United States. The sooty form is dark brown all over. It breeds along the Pacific Coast from the Olympic Peninsula northward to the Aleutian Islands, and winters from Alaska to California. The slate-colored form has a gray back and reddish wings, as well as a longer, reddish tail. It breeds from central British Columbia to Nevada and Colorado, and winters in the arid Southwest. The large-billed form has a gray back, reddish wings and tail, and a very thick bill. It breeds from central Oregon southward through California, and winters in California.

Question by You Don’t Know My Name: How do you break a bird from biting?
I have an Amazon Parrot that I plunked down 2000 dollars for. At the pet store he was nice to everybody, and talked, but I took him home and now he bites my dog’s ears, and terrorizes my cat. My other animals are so afraid of this bird that they won’t even go in the same room he is in. The people at the pet store said he’d be fine with other animals, but it doesn’t look like he is. Question by Silver Tipped Wings: How can I encourage birds and other animals to my yard?
When I was very young, there was a beautiful blue jay nesting in a small bush. It had a lovely nest and laid 3 perfect eggs. Me and my sister, plus my grandma, would walk to the bush every day and check on the eggs. They hatched wonderfully and we watched them every day grow up, it was so beautiful! Sadly, the mother abandoned the nest. Now 7 years later the nest is still abandoned and has deteriorated, still no little birdies.
How can I encourage new birds to come to my yard (but not use that old nest?) It is still extremely cold where I live (plus several feet of snow), but a few days ago I saw some beautiful finches on a tree. I left some soft yarn outside if they were making a nest, but it hasn’t been touched, and the small breadcrumbs are still there too. Is it just the wrong season?
What can I do to encourage animals and birds to my yard? I live in the midwest by the way. And do I HAVE to buy a bird feeder? Or can I use seeds or bread?
