Extinct Birds Q&A: Is it possible to breed back an extinct species?

Question by M: Is it possible to breed back an extinct species?
Provided its genes are passed on to representatives of another species.
Is it possible to breed back an animal that is – in terms of genetic makeup – IDENTICAL to its extinct ancestors?

There is so much fuss about rare animals going extinct. Why not have them breed with other species before their extinction, so that it will be possible to breed them back from extinction, should the need arise?

Yes, but not using the technique outlined by yourself. We would need actual samples of DNA from the now extinct species to have any hope of reviving them.
