Finch Bird Feeders Q&A: Finch feeders - How do I attract the birds to my yard?

Question by Liz B: Finch feeders – How do I attract the birds to my yard?
I have sunflower oilers hanging in my front yard feeder, but now have hung a finch feeder and also a hummingbird feeder. Now, how will these birds know there’s food available for them, too?

Best answer:

Answer by birdgirl
Just be patient and the birds will find the feeders. It took about 4 days for hummers to start appearing at mine, and even sooner when I hung a suet feeder.

Bird Houses How much should I ask for my purple martin bird houses at a garage sale?

Question by abbysmom1224: How much should I ask for my purple martin bird houses at a garage sale?
I have two purple martin houses that my father in law built for us. They have never been hung up but have been stored in the shed for about 10 years. They are made of solid wood and hand painted. I am asking $ 25 a piece for them. Is that too much? If so, what is a reasonable price?

Best answer:

Answer by Rachael T
I don’t think it’s too much. We bought my grandpa a metal one for over $ 100. you could put OBO on there and people could offer you then.

Cockatiel How do I make my cockatiel feel at home?

Question by Bayz: How do I make my cockatiel feel at home?
I bought a new pied cockatiel today, he is about 8 weeks old, still a baby, and he will not really do anything. He will just sit there in the cage, and when I try to pet him, he will hiss at me and fly all over the cage. I haven’t seen him eat, but I just got him a few hours ago, I just want to know the best way to make my new pet feel at home. I have another 7 year old boy cockatiel, which I thought would help the bird feel better. What else can I do?

Best answer:

Answer by hummersathome
Since you have had him for a few hours, give him time. He has to become adjusted to his new environment. Talk to him in a sweet manner and whistle at him. Don’t try to touch him yet. If you are able to leave the cage door open and still keep him safe, do it. Since he is a baby, you have a wonderful opportunity to train him and teach him new things. Good luck to you.

Bird Of Paradise What is the best way to transplant Bird of Paradise pups?

Question by Theresa P: What is the best way to transplant Bird of Paradise pups?
I have a “mother” Bird of Paradise plant that is about 10 feet tall and is about 10 years old. She bloomed from March of 2008 through early February of 09. She has about six pups that range in size from 2 – 5 feet tall. I know their rooting system is rather intense therefore I do not want to disturb or shock the “mother bird”. Please let me know if you have any ideas of how to transplant these “baby birds”. Thanks for your time!

Birds What was the number of birds on that tree?

birds
by emdot

Question by Rajeev N: What was the number of birds on that tree?
Once upon time, there was a bird that landed on a tree. The bird had noticed a group of birds on the same tree.

He said "hello hundred birds".
One of the birds replied "we are not hundred, but if you sum the total number of us plus the same number of us plus the half of us plus a quarter of us plus yourself, only then the total number will be hundred birds".

Then, the poor bird decided to run away.

What was the number of birds on that tree?

Goldfinch How to make a bird nest for a goldfinch?

Question by ben r: How to make a bird nest for a goldfinch?
MY teacher assigned us a project to build a goldfinch nest. What kinds of plants and twigs should we use to construct our goldfinch nest? What steps to take also…

Best answer:

Answer by gail
ADDED INFO: This is a Cornell Lab of Ornithology site that you have to subscribe to but their “free sample” page is about goldfinches w good info on nest building (just keep scrolling down). http://bna.birds.cornell.edu/bna/species/080/articles/breeding

They will use a mix of plant materials like grass, weeds, strips of vine, small leaves, small bits of larger leaves, even spider webs. I’ve read that female goldfinches have been observed pulling apart nests of other birds to steal material for her own nest (it’s a jungle out there!). After it’s woven together the inside is lined w thistle or cattail down (very soft plant material). The birds will even use bits of lint from human clothes dryers it they find it as well as animal fur. Backyard birdwatchers often place balls of natural cotton (bought fr bird supply stores) out for birds to gather. Most of the work is done by the female but the male will gather allot of the material. It’s an open cup shape about 3 inches in diameter (inside diam is 2 inches). It’s secured between 3 or 4 branches in a tree or bush, usually at least 4 feet off the ground but can be 30+ feet up in a tree. There are various videos posted on-line to watch these birds gathering nesting material (one is sourced). Gee, I never had any interesting assignments like this for my homework!

Extinct Birds What will be the consequences if birds become extinct?

Question by banthafodder3: What will be the consequences if birds become extinct?
Also, if you can, can you tell me how birds are beneficial to the environment.?

Best answer:

Answer by trooper J
if the all the birds will become extinct, then, there will be no birds to talk about. (just kidding) well, birds are vital to the environment because birds help in the propagation of plants. They help pollenate plants as they move from tree or flower to flower.

Cockatiel Birds How can i get my cockatiel birds to be less shy?

Question by King Prince: How can i get my cockatiel birds to be less shy?
my birds are really shy and afraid of everything. i’ve never taken them out of my cage and i don’t because they make a lot of mess with their feathers and they are afraid so im worried that they’d fly into something and hurt themselves. how can i get them to be less shy without taking them out of the cage?

Best answer:

Answer by dolphin3212
it takes alot of work. you have to keep the cage in the room you will be in the most for one. put an extra mirror in the cage and switch the toys often so they see new things are o.k. and talk to them alot. when you are ready to take it a step farthur, either you or someone experienced should clip their wings so they cant fly and hurt themselves but you need to give them alot of interaction.

Bird Table Pigeon hijacking my bird table/feeder?

Question by Carol1841: Pigeon hijacking my bird table/feeder?
A few weeks ago, I put a bird table in my garden and have had a nice variety of small birds come to it each day including blue tits, robins and blackbirds. For the last week, a fairly large pigeon has decided to take up residence around the garden and as soon as I top up the food on the table, he comes along and sits on the table and takes the food I have left for the smaller birds. While he is around, the smaller birds are not coming onto the table. Is there any way I can discourage it from eating the seed, i.e. should I be buying a particular kind of food? At the moment, I am feeding regular wild bird seen and wild bird peanuts.
Thanks for the useful answers so far. Just to add that I have no intention of killing anything, though I would happily make an exception for certain yahoo members who obviously haven’t got enough homework to do :-)

Bird Feeders How can I keep pigeons out but keep my bird feeders up for the little birds & hummingbirds ?

Question by gma: How can I keep pigeons out but keep my bird feeders up for the little birds & hummingbirds ?
I have bird feeders and love to watch all the birds. I don’t mind pigeons, but they scare the hummingbirds away. The pigeons also seem to be multiplying. I have fed birds for years, this is the first time I’ve had pigeon problems.
Can anyone help?

Best answer:

You could put a wire cover over the feeders with gaps big enough for the smaller birds but not pigeons. (Field wire I think is what its called)

Question by Hilary C: HELP I have bird Suet; but i don’t have any bird feeder. Instead of buying a bird feeder how can i make one??
What can i place the Suet on, or hang it in so that the birds can get to it!? Anything will help! Thank you!

Merry Christmas! :]

Best answer:

Answer by Joan H
Do you have an onion bag, made from string netting? If so, just drop it down in that, tie the top and hang on a tree limb, with another strong string. Hang it down from the tree limb, the birds will cling to it, and eat, while the squirrels will have a time, getting to it.

Names Of Birds is there a website i can go to to see full color pictures and names of wild back yard birds?

Question by trinastacia: is there a website i can go to to see full color pictures and names of wild back yard birds?
I live in Missouri and love to feed and watch my wild back yard birds. But I can’t identify all the new birds that have been passing through. Is there anywhere online that shows colored photos and names of birds?

Best answer:

Answer by margecutter
The best online field guide I have found is http://www.enature.com/fieldguides/

This one allows you to pick a region, or see birds of a given type from all over North America.

Other than that, I would suggest you pick up an inexpensive field guide from a second-hand book store. Sibley’s and Peterson’s are my two favorites, along with the Birds of North America, which has editions specific to various regions, but there are a multitude out there. Get one you feel most comfortable with.

Cockatiel Birds What should I do about my cockatiel birds?

Question by secura :]: What should I do about my cockatiel birds?
My cockatiel bird keeps laying eggs but doesn’t take care of them. The male cockatiel tries to make her take care of the eggs but they usually end up breaking.
she does have a nest.
thank you everyone that responded to my question but today when my cockatiel laid an egg she finally sat on it. I was thinking it was weird cause I barely posted this question yesterday. Just right now I checked in on her and she is laying on it. Its so cute!! :D

Best answer:

Answer by Oni
Your female cockatiel doesn’t appear to be ready or interested in being a mom. If that’s the case, you might want to separate them into different cages for awhile. They can still play together, but perhaps having separate cages will give her time to decide it’s time to be a mom.

Beyond that, make sure both of their needs are being met. Because she’s laying eggs, she’ll need more calcium. Make sure she has access to a cuttle bone. Make sure they both have large cages, plenty of toys, a healthy diet of pellets and bird friendly fresh foods (just seeds aren’t good!), and plenty of time outside the cage to socialize.

If she doesn’t want to take care of her eggs, you can’t make her. This is just something that might encourage her to try. I’ve heard of it working about as many times as I’ve heard of it not working.

What do you think? Answer below!
