Cockatiels Q&A: How Long Will My Cockatiels Want To Mate?

Question by Mackenzie R: How Long Will My Cockatiels Want To Mate?
I have two Normal grey cockatiels, a male and female. The male is trying to breed, but we don’t want babies. We are going to separate them for the time being. How long will they want to mate? How long will she be in season? Also, they are siblings, and a year and a half old.

Best answer:

Answer by Jamila
You can’t really keep a male and female together if you don’t want them to mate, the season lasts to long. They start mating around feb if weather is warm and can continue right through until september and if it stays warm longer then they follow the weather. Your best selling 1 and replacing it with the same sex.

Cockatiel Q&A: How do I get my Cockatiel out of her cage?

Question by Glowfox: How do I get my Cockatiel out of her cage?
A week ago I got a cockatiel, I feel thats she has warmed up to the enviorment a bit. But I feel sad for her always being in the cage and she seems so inquisitive and contempt. I really do think though that she should come out and play and interact a bit for us to develop a better relationship (she accepts my presence but not my touch) and for her to know the place better. She is 7 weeks old. And has been clipped. How do I get her to come out and explore?

Best answer:

Answer by Joanne A. W
Tie the door open and leave it that way.

If she is clipped, she cannot fly.

She will poop as she flies around your room/house.

Once she is out, you will have to let her go back to the cage on her own. Don’t try to catch her.

It would be best to leave her in the cage. They are born in cages and that is all they know.

By the way, if she was with several other birds when you bought her, she will probably pine herself to death for the other birds. You might want to get another to keep her company. Ask the clerk at the shop.

Flightless Birds What are some birds that are really good at hopping?

Question by weasels_forever: What are some birds that are really good at hopping?
Hello, I am trying to design a flightless bird for my fantasy world that travels primarily by hopping. They’re about the size of the average house cat. However, I need a reference bird for which to draw their legs. I know I’ve seen several birds hop from place to place when they’re on the ground (songbirds, toucans), but these birds have wings and wouldn’t normally spend the whole day doing that. I’m trying to strive for realism, so I’m hoping someone knows.
Thanks!

The finished dish.

Many birds get their nutrition from insects and, during the winter and spring especially, they find this harder to find insects or have a higher metabolism during mating season and when raising their young. Hanging a suet cake can attract nuthatches, woodpeckers, wrens, titmice, creepers, kinglets, chickadees, thrashers and cardinals.

Bird Cages Q&A: Is there any problem with getting a bird cage for a rat?

Question by Ska.Ska.Ska: Is there any problem with getting a bird cage for a rat?
So, I went to PetCo and Petsmart today and found a good quality bird cage for much less than a ‘small animal’ cage. My question is, if I take out the grate on the bottom and secure the easy-sliding side doors to the cage with wire so the rats can’t open them, can I substitute this cage for a rat cage?
I’m planning on putting in ledges and landings and such around the cage so the rats have a smaller chance of falling as well.

Best answer:

Parrot What kind of parrot do you think is good for my lifestyle?

Question by Casio: What kind of parrot do you think is good for my lifestyle?
Hello! The past couple of years I’ve been considering getting a parrot. within those years I did TONS of research on different species but I’m still a little hesitant. I’d like a bird as a companion I really don’t mind if it can talk or not I’d only consider it to be an added bonus. I have plenty of space for a large cage and im at home 80% of the day meaning I’d be able to provide plenty of out of cage time, training, and attention while I sit at the computer and work. As far as the price of the bird is concerned I’d like to not spend more than $ 1,500 but a bit higher is ok. Another consideration is noise I personally like a lot of noise my house is extremely quiet some loud squawking and an occasional scream would be quite enjoyable. And since i don’t live in an apartment I highly doubt my neighbors will mind either. Although I’d like to stay away form some of the smaller birds the biggest reason being that I have cats and well, I’m sure you understand. All in all I just would like a bird with a great personality and since every bird is unique in a way this question is almost pointless but still I’d like your opinion. Thankyou for reading and suggestions will be appreciated!!
Actually, yes I have found a good Avian vet. Its a very nice facility and about 5 mins away by car. And I used to wokr at a small family owned parrot shop as a teenager (they bred their own bird and rehabilitated bird from the local shelters and helped in finding them new homes) I’d work from the time i got home from school till they closed (5 hour shifts) The owner kept a Hyacinth Macaw in store even though it wasn’t for sale, she just wanted to be close to it while she worked and it would scream ALL THE TIME as well as the added chirping and screaming from the other bird I became quite accustomed to it. thank you though for the quick responses :)

Parrot Could you please give my tips on buying a cockatool parrot?

Question by Victorious: Could you please give my tips on buying a cockatool parrot?
I am buying a large cockatool parrot and i have a ton of questions. Will it let me sleep? I have to keep it in my bedroom. In the summer what do i do about air conditioning? My house has the kind we place in the window and we only turn them on at night so this has me concerned. And last will my parrot attract mice? We do have a history of mice in my home. I belive they are all gone but still im concerned.

Best answer:

Answer by poweranni
cockatoo?

They can scream at night.

Air conditioning is not great for birds unless it is really, really hot. There is no air conditioning in their native habitat.

You parrot will not attract mice, but his food will.

You know … this might not be the best species for you, at this time.

Cockatiels and many other species of parrot, do not scream at night. And they don’t scream as loud. Unless you own your home, or plan on living there for the next 60 years, perhaps a cockatoo is not the best choice right now.

All they do is eat all the food, and don’t save anything for the cool birds? Any help would be appreciated.

It’s a bird feeder. They’re birds.

Perhaps a sign that says “no blackbirds allowed”; or you could have a bird bouncer to only let in the cool birds.
