Answer by Treesy
If it does not need to be thick, I would use 1/8″ or 1/4″ plywood (sold at Michael’s). Trace the picture onto the wood and if you have a friend with a scroll saw (power tool) it would be pretty easy to cut out, even for a beginner.
If no scroll saw is available a coping saw (fret saw) would be the next best choice (this appears too small for a saber saw) These are fairly cheap and sold at hardware stores, etc… Michael’s might even have them, though they’d be more expensive.
Build a simple birdsmouth or V-board jig (often used in Marquetry) to make the cutting easier by taking a piece of wood about 3/4″ thick x 8″-12″ long and cut a V on the front end and clamp the back end to a table. Sit so the jig is about shoulder level and place the piece to be cut over the V. With the handle of the saw below the table and the teeth pointed down begin cutting just a hair outside the line, moving/turning the piece as required keeping the cutting within the V. When done sand the edges smooth with 120-180 grit sandpaper.

Question by daniiellee: How to tame/train love birds?
Four days ago I got a male and female love bird pair. They’re 9 months old and the previous owner (couldn’t keep them anymore) had only begun to work with them a little bit. I’m not sure how long they had had them. They act normally until you walk over to their cage are a hand goes near them (they get scared and go to the corner of the cage). I was wondering how to begin to tame them and have them trust me. Also their wings aren’t clipped, but I was thinking of getting it done soon.

Question by Austin Williams: What could be keeping hummingbirds away?
So live in North-Eastern Texas around Dallas in the open fields and country and each year in the past we have had at least one hummingbird return to my grandmothers backyard and several almost 4 years ago. Lately we have noticed that it has been greatly windy. There has also an abundance of swifts and other large birds. Also, we cut down some dead rose bush they previously perched on. Could any of these reasons be keeping the hummingbirds from returning? Also what can we do to attract them now? We will plants anything needed and i can build anything which may attract them. Plus we do plant fresh flowers and have a feeder, so whats up?
Best answer:
Answer by missS
Everyone has noticed a decline in the bird numbers this year. Migration is very late. Hopefully it will pick up.
To attract the hummingbirds put out a feeder using 1 part sugar to 4 parts water. Change and clean the feeder every 3 days or as soon as it gets cloudy.
Plant a tree for them to perch and nest in.
Buy a salvia Black and Blue, salvia coccinea ‘Lady in Red’. If you can, plant some vines with flowers that the birds enjoy. This is just a start…

Mockingbirds are a group of New World passerine birds from the Mimidae family. They are best known for the habit of some species mimicking the songs of other birds and the sounds of insects and amphibians, often loudly and in rapid succession. There are about 17 species in three genera.

This was taken on the south side of Narrabeen Lake in Sydney, Australia. I don’t know how many times I went past where the finches hang out before one perched long enough to get a shot off. This is fairly heavily cropped.
Unfortunately the bit of scrub where this flock of birds hung out has now been cleared for the extension of a retirement home.

Answer by zawni2004
So do you live in Australia? If so you will have to find out if its illegal for you to own the parrot or not.
You need to contact the agriculture dept in your country to see what all is required for you to take the bird out of the country. This will usually entail him seeing a vet before the leave and the new country may quarantine your bird for a certain about of time. If you contact your agriculture dept they should be able to to tell you what steps you need to do on both sides.

Question by Carebear: Wild baby bird question?
Ok so yesterday i was sitting in art class and these 2 little girls cam and took me outside were there was a baby bird so after school i took it and another one i found home because i was worried the idiots at my school would kill them. and then today i found another one in the same spot. they are not old eneough to learn how to fly yet are they trying to kill themselves?? and I have been feeding them mushy dog food out of a syringe and they are doing well but how much should i be feeding them? normally i have been giving them 4 cc’s is that enough? and how often should i feed them 1 almost has all his feathers, 1 has some/most of his feathers and the other one is just getting his in. note they were all found in the same place. and i would like to know what kind of bird they are they have really long legs like 1 in they are very big for being babies and their beaks are large.
My questions:
how much to feed them?

Answer by birdgirl
If the bird is fully feathered, it is most likely a fledgling and has left the nest on it’s own and it’s parents are caring for it. It is normal for birds to leave the nest before they can fly. You need to replace it where you found it, preferably in a scrub or tree so it is relatively safe from predators, and the parents should come back to feed it. If it is unfeathered, then look for a nest and if you can find it, replace it into the nest. Do not worry about your scent being on the chick as birds have a very poorly developed sense of smell and will not reject a baby that has been touched. If you cannot find a nest, get the bird to a local wildlife rehab for it’s best chance of survival. Also, keep in mind, it is illegal for you to try and raise this bird on your own. All birds in the U.S. are protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. Look for a rehab here:

Question by clc6583: Not a pet? Squirrels and birds nesting questions?
I love the birds and squirrels in my yard, the squirrels are so much fun to watch and are quite friendly too.
I want to do nice things for them for entertaining me since I can’t have pets – has anyone provided bedding material for birds and squirrels before? I have a huge bag of dryer lint I was saving for this purpose, but can’t really bring myself to set it out there for them. What about yarn? Do you think birds would take yarn/string if I set it out for them? Am I starting too early, should I wait until later in the spring?
Has anyone done this before?
Best answer:
Answer by margecutter
I often provide nesting material for my outdoor feathered friends.
Cornell Lab of Ornithology suggests:
Ideally you should provide nest material naturally by leaving or creating wild, natural areas on your property (perhaps hidden from your neighbor’s view) where plants can grow into thickets, and leaves and twigs can fall and not be raked up immediately. This untidy debris gives a variety of material for the birds to pick through when they are building nests. They may even pick through your compost pile looking for suitable nest material.
Alternatively, you can put out concentrated stashes of nest material. It can be natural materials like straw, small sticks, and twigs, or manmade materials such as yarn and string. Try putting out any combination of the following:
Dead twigs
Dead leaves
Dry grass
Yarn or string—cut into 4- to 8-inch pieces
Human or animal hair (especially horse hair)
Fur (e.g. dog or cat fur)
Sheep’s wool
Feathers
Plant fluff or down (e.g. cattail fluff, cottonwood down)
Kapok, cotton batting, or other stuffing material
Moss
Bark strips
Pine needles
Thin strips of cloth, about 1 inch wide by 6 inches long
Shredded paper
Among the strange materials birds occasionally use in their nests are snake skins, plastic strips, cellophane, and aluminum foil. Many small birds use spider webs to glue nest material together. Swallows, phoebes, and American Robins use mud to construct their nests. You might consider creating or keeping a muddy puddle in your garden for them.
What about dryer lint? Some people include this as suitable bird nesting material. Others recommend against it because it is porous and dries out poorly if it’s rained on in the nest. Still others warn that wet dryer lint dries into a hard mass, providing poor nest insulation, however this may happen only if it contains laundry detergent or fabric softener residue. More information is needed before we can recommend offering dryer lint.

Puffin on Skomer Island
We went over to Skomer Island on the boat from Martin’s Haven in June. What an amazing day. It is a short boat ride from which we saw porpoises, dolphins and seals. The steep steps up from the boat are not for the feint-hearted but the climb up was more than worth it. If you ever go to Pembrokeshire with your camera put Skomer on your list of places you must visit. Bring a packed lunch and water proofs – there’s not much shelter on the island other than a disused farmhouse which has had a picnic area installed – there are no cafes or shops on Skomer Island.
As well as making photographs I also rent out my little cottage hideaway in Pembrokeshire, Wales. It’s about a twenty minute drive away from Martin’s Haven where you get the boat to Skomer Island. If you’re interested check out my website www.pembrokeshire-cottage-holidays.co.uk You can also follow on Twitter@PembsHolidays or like our Facebook page Heather Cottage at Rogeston.
Pembrokeshire is a photographers paradise – beautiful empty beaches, amazing landscapes, lots of historic locations to explore, gorgeous light and amazing skies. Nowhere better to escape with your camera.

As a general rule, I’d get the small one. But if you want them to bathe in one, I’d get a larger one for that.
In my bird cages, I usually keep cups about the size of the small one, with my larger birds, they have an even bigger cup that I put fresh foods in (so they’re not piled on top of each other), but that’s mainly just because it’s what I had at the time.

Not really a black-headed bird, more chocolate-brown – in fact, for much of the year, it has a white head. It is most definitely not a ‘seagull’ and is found commonly almost anywhere inland. Black-headed gulls are sociable, quarrelsome, noisy birds, usually seen in small groups or flocks, often gathering into larger parties where there is plenty of food, or when they are roosting.

Question by PediC: How long does it take wild finches to find a new thistle feeder?
I’m impatient!
Best answer:
Answer by margecutter
It depends on how many other sources of food are available – both natural and at other feeders in the neighborhood. I have a thistle feeder up all year long, and some days the finches eat up all of the feed in the feeder and other times there is not a single bird on the feeder all week.
Other factors are placement of the feeder – make sure there is ample cover for the birds to hide in if a predator appears, but not enough cover so a cat could hide in wait of them.
If there is a lot of activity around the feeder (predators, pets, kids), the birds will not come.
