reason is i am rehabing a magpie and i see older magpies roll there food in dirt

2. to get helpfull bacteria in the gut
3. other ???????????

Birds roll in the dirt a lot. It is mainly for dislodging parasites but it also helps to remove old oil and shake out and rearrange clumped feathers. Not sure why they are rolling their food sorry for not answering well.

Question by :]: What are ten markings that help with bird identification?
I’ve already come up with size&shape, color, behavior, habitat, songs$ calls, and field marks. I need at least 4 more!
Best answer:
Answer by DrJ
First of all, field marks include size and shape, color, etc. So substract field marks from your list.
You forgot distribution (I don’t expect kiwis in North America) and time of year (I don’t expect Robins in the middle of winter in Canada).
You could become a little finer in your id marks…..
Instead of behavior, you could have flight pattern, feeding habits, habitat selection, daily activity (nocturnal/diurnal).
Size is not a good id mark….. in the field you often can’t determine size unless you have two birds. Shape is a good mark but again…. bill size, posture, tail dimensions, wing shape. Number of primary feathers, …..
There are lots of color marks…. wing bars, eye ring, outer tail feathers, rump color, etc.
For research biologists DNA analysis, even from feathers.

Question by HBK: How do I teach plum headed parrots to talk?
I recently bought 2 plum headed parrots, and I heard from a friend of mine, that I can’t keep them in the same cage if I am going to teach them to talk. So even if I keep them in the same cage will they ever learn to talk?
Best answer:
Answer by Sonnie
I am not sure about plum headed but I have two sun conures on the same cage and both of them now learn how to talk and say the word “hello” and “Can’t wait”. I basically, repeat the word to them at least 30 times a day, then one day they already say the word.

Downy Woodpecker on our Feeder
Here’s a Downy Woodpecker feeding away at one of our caged bird-feeders. This guy let us walk up within about two feet of him and didn’t seem to care one bit that we were there. It was taken at dusk with the feeder under the branches of a pine tree, thus he’s lit up using an sb-600 speedlight.

Question by : Can anyone help me with a bird identification?
So I was out on a camping trip in Louisiana, and I saw this big woodpecker fly over the campsite and land about 50 yards away. All I saw was that its back had a big white triangle on it, and it definitely had a black head. I found information on Pileated woodpeckers, but they dont have black heads. I dont know what it is. I would really like to know because it was such a cool looking bird.
Best answer:
Answer by lizzzy9
The only woodpecker that I found that could remotely resemble the one you saw is supposedly extinct except for possibly Arkansas. Female Ivory-billed woodpeckers have black heads and a white-looking triangle on the backside. Ivory-billed woodpeckers are big, like pileated. I would be highly skeptical, however, that this was the bird you saw, unless, of course, you got some good clean photos of it. http://bna.birds.cornell.edu/bna/species/711/galleries/figures/ivory-billed-woodpecker-draw/image_large

Question by sawbaca: How would you make a bird ball feeder with suet/beef fat/ pork fat?
I read somewhere that people would make some sort of bird feeder ball with seeds/fat. Then hang them on their tree/xmas tree for the birds. One way to decorate xmas tree.

The easy way is to use one of those mesh onion bags from the market – just clip one end to get the onions out, fill it with suet, and hang from a tree.
