Question by charlie: How to make my cockatiel and lovebird get along?
In my lovebirds past home they had a cockatiel when they got her (passed away before she was sold to me) and they used to get along well and I don’t let them out at the same time to avoid a fight but she always lands on his cage and wants to play with him but he just hisses and tries to bite her how do I make him more tolerant of her? He’s never been around other birds whereas she has so she thinks that she can play with him but he doesn’t like it what should I do?

It is impossible to make birds do what they don’t want to do, so there is a chance that your cockatiel may simply never want to be around your lovebird.
Do not bring them out at the same time. Instead, let them both see each other from the security of their own cage. This is very important for your cockatiel, and he is probably feeling a little scared never having met another bird. The fact that your lovebird has already landed on his cage may have pushed the cockatiel farther into this fear, because they don’t know if this bird is mean or not, and it was on his cage which he sees as a safe place.
So, let them observe each other for many days from a couple feet away plus. 4 or 5 days is good. You should start seeing signs that your tiel is getting more used to the lovebird. They may start to tweet back and forth to each other, go to the part of the cage that is closest to the others cage. These are good signs.
Next move the cages a couple inches from each other. This makes it so they feel safe but are getting more adjusted to the other bird being close. Keep it like this for another 4 or 5 days. Hopefully, they will be showing signs of friendliness. (similar to what they would show when they were farther away).
Make sure you are spending the SAME amount of time with your tiel as you did before the other bird. Make sure your bird knows it will be the same as it was before the bird left. If you are bonded with the tiel, you don’t want it getting (for lack of a better word) territorial over you. So, keep the tiels life the exact same otherwise.
