I am looking to buy a Canary, but I don’t know really where to start. I mean, obviously, I want to get a big cage and the actual bird, but after that I’m stumped. I’ve looked for hours all over the internet including Youtube, Google, and even this site, and I can’t find a solid answer. I did find a WikiHow page, but other than that nothing specific or what I’m looking for. I found some breeding videos on Youtube, but I am not interested in breeding, as this will be my first bird (I had a few finches as a child, but this will be my first bird I alone am taking care of). I’ve taken care of dogs and cats before, but not birds. I am more than willing to spend over an hour of training every day on this bird, but I don’t really know how. Some people say that food will let it trust you, while others say just being there will do the trick.
I also don’t really know what to feed it, and how to keep it healthy. I know the obvious things, clean its cage, keep it away from other animals, ect. I want to keep this bird for a long time, which will mean keeping it as healthy as possible. Side question, how long is the average life span of Canaries and other similar* domestic birds? *Similar meaning not parrots and big birds.

What do you want to train it to do? Ive raised hundreds of birds, finches to macaws. Food is a huge factor in training but canaries don’t do all that much. You can sometimes teach them to fly to you or perch on your finger but it is extremely difficult. Being there plus food is the way to go. Use millet as a training tool…they are crazy for it and only give him millet when you get the reaction you want from him. Baby steps. Canaries can live 7-10 years with excellent care. Finches the same lifespan and parakeets and cockatiels can live 10+ years. Canaries will eat a high quality canary seed mixture plus fresh fruits veggies, meats and eggs. The bigger the cage the better with lots of perches, different feeding stations containing different foods and even toys. There are a lot of guys into canary breeding. They’ll breed the best and most beautiful songbirds. You should find one of them local to where you live and see if they have any just weaned canaries for sale. Get him as young as possible.
