Question by ROSE V: My baby parakeet fell from his bird house and I think he injured his legs. Will they heal by themselves?
they are both extended backwards and he can’t seem to stand or perch. He is laying on top of his bird house
He was in a wood house with four other birds. They are probably four weeks old. He came out of the house with another little bird. I checked and it seems that its only one leg that is turned backwards. His parents and the other little bird that left the house are feeding it. Will it survive with just one leg?

He may just be in shock. It’s hard to say. I doubt he actually “fell”, though. It sounds like there might be another issue going on that caused him to drop from the perch. Is he in with other birds, or alone? What type of house is in the cage? Parakeets shouldn’t need a house unless they are nesting (laying eggs). Are you sure it’s a male? What room does he live in? Have you used any cleaners, air sprays, etc?
Ok, so this is a “baby”. It’s really hard to say without looking at it. Is it actually twisted backwards, or is it just pushed behind him?
It is possible the leg is fine, and he is just suffering from the shock of leaving the nest for the first time. If that is the case, you can just leave him alone, and he should come around.
If the leg is injured, there is a possibility of resetting it – you really need a vet for this, though. I have heard of birds surviving on one leg. And parakeets can recover from broken limb, but they first need to see a vet.
How long has he been out of the nest? If you are comfortable handling the baby, it’s ok to gently pick him up and assess the leg. Just don’t pull it one way or the other.
