in the pet shops in the birds cages, there is some sort of mixture of small stone and crushed shells. What is it exactly, and where can you get it?What does it do ?

It’s called grit. It contains crushed stone and/or oyster shell. All pet stores that carry other bird supplies should have it. It’s a calcium supplement and it also supplies the gizzard with material to help grind food. As long as other calcium sources are provided, it’s not needed more than once every couple months. Too much can cause digestive irritation, especially in smaller birds.
