Bird Suet Cakes What does different flavored suet do?

Question by joe joe: What does different flavored suet do?
Do different flavored bird suet cakes attract different birds? Is it just for a variety? What type should I put out to attract a certain type of bird, does berry attract chickadees, does hot pepper attract finches, etc. etc. etc.? Right now I have peanut and berry what will those attract and are those the best? I am confused please help.

The birds don’t care. Of course if the sellers can get you to buy two types of suet feeders, you’ll be spending twice as much and their register will go Ka Ching. To attract specific birds use their favorite seeds etc. Finches love Niger seed. Most birds go for oiler sunflower seeds. A lot of the seeds in the packs are just fillers because they are really cheap compared to the oilers or the Niger seed.

I went to the library and read what the people who experiment with their feeders found to attract birds. One of the extras I added was a heated bird bath so they could get water on the coldest days. It was as much of an attractant as the seeds and suet. Once their thirst was satisfied they stuck around for the seeds and suet. The birds do like different berrties and nuts. I always remember to have a few little piles of gravel or sand available too. they need it to grind up their seeds etc.

Its a lot more fun to experiment and know what the birds want rather than take someone else’s word for it. Once you understand what and how to do it, you’ll follow the birds right through the spring and summer with Oranges and sugar water etc. Then, like me you’ll have spaces in your yard for nesting and berries on the plants. You’ll add a mud puddle for nest building. Who can resist putting out nesting materials and nesting boxes? Be careful. You’ll find yourself a full fledged birder before you can stop. Oh, yes the birding stations do attract squirrels and hawks.
