Stalking wary Cardinals with a 300mm is an exciting game. The two times in the field that I’ve got close enough for a portrait have been when the Cardinal, very conspicuous and evidently aware of that, was well protected by briars and didn’t fly off immediately when he spied me. This bird did indeed see me, cocking his head and shifting his position, but wasn’t worried enough to leave his secure perch.
