Question by Ayla: Retarded/deformed goldfinch?
For the past few weeks, we’ve been noticing a female goldfinch at the feeder. She is always puffed up, and doesn’t quite match the other adults in color. She doesn’t seem to have good balance, and doesn’t fly very well. She doesn’t seem afraid of either us or our cats. It’s not likely she’ll be able to fly south for the winter, since she can’t even fly from one end of the deck to the other.
What is the matter with her, and is there anything we can do to help her make it through the winter?

You may want to call a wildlife rehabilitator to come and take a look at her. If they think it’s in trouble, they’ll probably take care of it.
