Free Birds Q&A: Tips on making bird cages?

Question by Kaylin: Tips on making bird cages?
So I want to start a minor bird sanctuary. Just for parakeets. I know all the concerns and did a lot of reasearch on the breed itself. Now I’m building a cage that is 48″ long 36″ wide and 60″ tall. How many birds can I have. There will be plenty of perches and toys and food and water. Thanks bye

here is all the free bird cage info that I could find. Cage only fits 10 to 12 birds depending on the species of parakeets you plan to have and even then it will be tight- it is better to have less and happier birds.

replace finch screen with screen made for budgies. Info on lighting and warmth, put/position cage-etc, that most people do not know or think it does not matter – but new research lately has found that these things are important for the mental and physical well being of all birds – it helps make them happy and less aggresive and helps stop plucking and is needed to help them to process the vit D3 and calcium.

this has some VERYcheap ideas to holding smaller cages inside- and more sites on bottom of screen.
Safe wood http://www.mdvaden.com/bird_page.shtml
and how to process it into perches – wood branches are healthier for feet and chew toys.

this site shows how to make perches out of branches – use stainless steel parts for attaching because the cheaper stuff have Zinc in it which is poisonous to birds.
You may also want to get a air purifier to place near the birds with hepa filter and UV. -for you and the birds health- there are too many diseases lately like SARS or Avian flu and bird respiratory diseases that are airborne. Bird droppings also end up drying and turning into dust that float all over and a lot of the transmittable diseases that are horrors for people and birds are spread this way. Chose one sink to do all the rinsing and washing of bird dishes and never use the kitchen sink. Get all the food and cleaning supplies and bird first aid kit in one place- this cut down on transmition of any diseases. Always clean up sink and faucets and your hands very well after handling bird stuff with clorax or white vinegar or hydrogen peroxide- there are many disinfectants( there is no sterilizers unless you get an autoclave) for different things – some are toxic unless handled and used properly (like clorax)- some are non toxic(hydrogen perxide) but can be dangerous- etc. Feed stores have disinfectants for bird use which are good for cleaning cages and not have to worry about fumes. Lately white vinegar is the preferred disinfectant for cleaning. Have a big trash can that is covered and lined with trash bag near the cage and sink area for dirty poopy paper and old discarded fresh food and old seeds, etc. This is needed to keep the dust and dirt down and keep rodents and insects from easy access and contaminates contained. Get in the habit of bagging up tightly and removing the garbage inside to outside in a timely manner- remember the better you keep the area clean the healthier you and your birds will be. I have seen people here saying they have mice and bugs in the cage and into the feed( put feed in pest free storage- some recommend that you freeze all seeds to kill the insects in the the seeds (yes there always is some)and store little amounts in the refrigerator. Clean the cage monthly and all stuff inside and disinfect and clean and dust all area around also- with safe non toxic clean! ers like micro fiber clothes and white vinegar. There are UV wands to kill some stuff and some cheap steam cleaners have been recommended to clean bird cages that are too big to move all over and scrub down with disinfectants. You will need transport cages for when you need to take birds to vets or emergency moving like hurricanes etc. – so be on the outlook for used carriers or collapsible cages for bird -now- you need a place to put your non tamed birds while cleaning the cage. I am including the best sites for budgies care also

this one on the bottom do not lose because the nutrition part is hard to get to from the home site= the home site is the one of the most indepth site for budgies there is and it is slowly being translated into english and is growing constantly.
