As Florida State Seminoles, we have teams that we will always love to hate, and losing in any athletic event to schools like Florida, Miami, or Clemson really gets under our skin. A win over any of those rival institutions is that much sweeter than a win over any other school, whether it's a sport that's so highly viewed and focused on as football or a sport that slips below most radars such volleyball or golf.

However, there is a school that isn't on that list that has taken pride in spoiling our athletic seasons and conference records this whole entire 2012-2013 period, driving daggers into our hearts slowly but surely. Some of you may already know who I'm talking about and for those of you who don't; I'll give you a hint. They're based out of Raleigh, North Carolina and sport the colors red and white.

Yes, the NC State Wolfpack.

NC State has been an oversized thorn in the side of Seminole athletics for too long now and being an ACC opponent, the 'Noles and Wolfpack have several different collision courses on different schedules. This past season, NC State has beaten almost every one of our school's major athletic programs, including basketball, baseball and football.

The Wolfpack from Raleigh has irritated some of our teams during regular season play, but not quite sent our teams packing. NC State took our basketball teams, both men's and women's, down a peg this athletic year.

The men's team was run out of the PNC arena by a score of 84-66, which was the final dagger in the team's chances for an NCAA Tournament bid, followed by the women's squad dropping a home game to The Pack only five days before.
Like the men's basketball team, the men's tennis team was dominated in Raleigh, being sent home with a 5-2 loss with an ACC loss that put them on the bad side of .500 in conference play.

Of the two sports that the Wolfpack completely spoiled seasons, one of came earlier in the year but will haunt many a Florida State supporter for years to come, and the other came very recently on the 11th of May.

Starting with the latter of the two, our 'Noles softball team had an incredibly dominant season in terms of both an overall record, but also ACC record, only to be spoiled by none other than NC State.

After going 18-2 in ACC play, including a series sweep against the Wolpack in Raleigh, the 'Noles sat atop the entire conference by a fairly large margin. With two wins in the Tallahassee-based ACC Championship game, our Seminoles had one last team to knock out before their 12th ACC title was rightfully earned, NC State. In what can only be described as a pitcher's duel, the Wolfpack just sneaked out of Tallahassee with a 1-0 win over our 19th-ranked Seminole team.

The most haunting NC State memory we have in recent history is a football game we've all obsessed over the past seven months. Our highly coveted, yet slightly doubted third-ranked 'Noles traveled to Raleigh in routine fashion on only the second road game of the season and look as if they're on their way to a sixth straight victory, only to have a second half meltdown, allowing NC State to rally a comeback that would be completed in the dwindling seconds as Mike Glennon found Bryan Underwood for a touchdown, putting the Wolfpack on top by a score of 17-16.

With a single play, FSU's national championship hopes came to an end, and Seminoles everywhere lowered their heads in defeat.

A happy ending and hope for redemption for our terribly strange story came through a series win from our fifth-ranked 'Noles baseball team.

A series that began in NC State's favor with a 3-1 Wolfpack win (a win that only added to the headache they've cause us already), ended well for our boys in Garnet and Gold as they piled on two convincing wins before the ride home, winning the second game 12-3 and then the third 8-4.

NC State being ranked seventh only made the series win that much sweeter.

With nearly all athletic schedules coming to an end, we can take a deep breath and start looking forward to the next group of seasons that are on their way in. The healing process began with the baseball team's wins over the dreaded red and white, and will only get better when their football team comes to visit October 26th.

Hopefully, with a nice blowout of our tormentors, we can shake off the Wolfpack voodoo they clearly cast upon us and get back to showing them who's boss.

You're driving around town with the windows down and the radio is blaring to your favorite song. Nothing ruins the moment more than a sudden cut to what seems like an hour of commercials. Switch the dial to WVFS Tallahassee, 89.7FM, to enjoy a full 24 hours of commercial-free music. Known as "The Voice of Florida State," V89 is a volunteer-run radio station with approximately 200 students and community members. Housed in the Diffenbaugh Building on FSU's campus, V89 strives to air new music, along with playing many classics and tracks from local artists. They play an array of genres, including blues, jazz, soul, club, punk, hip hop and metal.

"WVFS Tallahassee is by objective standards one of the best college radio stations in the country," General Manager and Faculty Program Director of V89 Dr. Misha Laurents said. "We help to expose new music and provide a true alternative in programming. We are excited to play CDs and vinyls (versus computer files), to have a live person on the air 24 hours a day, for 365 days a year and to take requests anytime."

The station also informs the community about current sports, politics and airs free public service announcements for activities held in and around the Tallahassee area. V89 is also home to a multitrack recording studio where musical acts can perform. Affiliated with the FSU Student Government Association and the College of Communication and Information, V89 is nationally recognized by the Federal Communication Commission for its superb content and music choice. WVFS Tallahassee first hit the airwaves in September of 1987, and was recognized as a GAVIN station in 1991, an honor given to only a few stations in the country that helps to determine national music charts.

With the station's reputation on the rise, it won the 1992 GAVIN Program Director of the Year award as well as the College Music Journal Director of the Year Award in 1993 which determines the CMJ Radio 200 and Core Radio Chart. After a pledge drive in 1994, V89 was able to upgrade to 2700 watts which allowed the station to reach outward of a 25-mile radius.

The 2000s was the start of a remarkable decade for the station, where it was nationally recognized in Rolling Stone Magazine, leading to its live audio streaming on their website. In 2001, musical legends Andrew Bird, Lesser Birds of Paradise and Aqueduct stopped by the station for an in-studio session. Along with its many awards, WVFS Tallahassee won a Bronze World Medal for Regularly Scheduled Comedy for its "Mickee Faust Fifth of Comedy" show from the New York Festivals Radio Programming Awards and the Communicator Award of Excellence.

The most popular programming on the station ranges from news updates to various music playlists. "Tomahawk Talk" airs Mondays from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m., where listeners can voice their opinions on past and upcoming sports games. Wake up to the musical stylings of "Caffeine-A-Go-Go" weekdays from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. or take a late-night study break and listen to local music, interviews and live performances on "Hootenanny," airing Mondays from 10 p.m. to midnight.

Lastly, don't forget to mark your calendars for the two-time winner of the New York Festival Radio Programming and Promotion Awards' Bronze Medal, "Vox Populi," where students can listen to information on current events, interviews and advice on monthly topics. "Vox Populi" airs the second Wednesday of every month from 9:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Students are also encouraged to get involved with the renowned V89. The station holds a cattle call at the beginning of each semester. "You can work in all facets of radio broadcast including news, sports, writing, public
relations/promotions, production and announcing," said Laurents. "No experience is required. We provide hands-on training for all positions." Come get a taste of what V89 has to offer. WVFS Tallahassee has every Seminoles' music, sports and news needs covered. Visit V89 on wvfs.fsu.edu for more information.

— Bryan Underwood vs. Lamarcus Joyner

If you're wondering why the name Bryan Underwood sounds so familiar, it's because he was on the receiving end of the game-winning touchdown in the NCSU upset last year. The receiver stands only 5 foot 9, but finished with ten receiving touchdowns last year and had an eight game streak in which he got into the endzone. The wideout is the Wolfpack's most explosive player and could get come rushes in the game as he has over a 100 yards rushing on the season. FSU has already contained ACC playmakers such as Stefon Diggs and Sammy Watkins on the season, and the 'Noles secondary, led by Lamarcus Joyner, will look to do the same with Underwood.
.

— Jack Tocho vs. Kelvin Benjamin

True freshman cornerback Jack Tocho got his first start last week against Wake Forest and finished the game with two interceptions. The 6-foot-1 defensive back's task this week? 6-foot-5 Kelvin Benjamin. Tocho is a big corner himself, but Benjamin dwarfs nearly the entire NC State roster and his leaping abilities make him even more of a threat. Redshirt freshman Jameis Winston will be sure to test the true freshman when Benjamin is lined up on him.
.

— Pete Thomas vs. Florida State Secondary

Pete Thomas is the starting quarterback for NC State, but is far from his predecessors (Russell Wilson and Mike Glennon) in terms of on the field success so far. The quarterback has eight interceptions on the season to three touchdowns, and will be facing a Florida State secondary that has seven players that have recorded an interception. Now, he does have 184 yards rushing on the year, but he'll need to put the ball in the air if he wants to do as the quarterbacks before him, beat Florida State.
.

— Robert Caldwell vs. Devonta Freeman

Freeman has been the most consistent back for the Seminoles this season and just looks faster and more explosive than ever. This week he'll be going up against Wolfpack middle linebacker Robert Caldwell. Caldwell leads NC State in tackles and tackles for loss with 7.5. Last season, Chris Thompson ran all over the Wolfpack, finishing with 141 yards. Freeman will look to avoid Caldwell's tackles in the backfield and will to try to have as much success as his predecessor.

Pied Bushchat (Male)
thorn birds

The Pied Bushchat (Saxicola caprata) is a small passerine bird found ranging from West and Central Asia to South and Southeast Asia. About sixteen subspecies are recognized through its wide range with many island forms. It is a familiar bird of countryside and open scrub or grassland where it is found perched at the top of short thorn trees or other shrubs, looking out for insect prey. They pick up insects mainly from the ground, and were, like other chats, placed in the thrush family Turdidae, but are now considered as Old World flycatchers.

They nest in cavities in stone walls or in holes in an embankment, lining the nest with grass and animal hair. The males are black with white shoulder and vent patches whose extent varies among populations. Females are predominantly brownish while juveniles are speckled.
