Question by Hayley: Hummingbirds in the winter?
I live in western Washington, so it is unusual to see hummingbirds. But when I do see then, it’s during the winter. Last year, I saw 3 hummingbirds, 2 of which I saw when it was snowing. Today, I saw one, despite it being very cold. Is this unusual? Also, do hummingbirds migrate?

Anna’s hummingbird occurs in Washington State and they don’t migrate. However, they stay within a short distance of the sea in coastal areas, because the moderating effects of the ocean, which keeps the low altitude areas from freezing.
These hummingbirds can survive in cold weather by going into torpor at night, when they allow their body temperature to fall within a few degrees of freezing to conserve energy. During the day, they warm back up to about 105 deg. F., normal temperature for a bird. During the day, they have to eat about every 15 minutes to stay alive. Other species of hummingbirds migrate to the south to spend the winter. Anna’s are the exception.
You can help them out with a simple hummingbird feeder.
