Question by Angela: Bird Feeding Tips; Please Help!?
I feed birds and I have a lot of sparrows. I know that pretty much the only way to get rid of those pesky birds is just to not feed them. But, I am not going to stop putting food out because I want my other birds to eat. Does anyone know of a certain type of feeder that discourages house sparrows? There is a bird feeder at this link: http://www.birds-n-garden.com/assorted_bird_feeders_11.html
Does anyone use this type of bird feeder and does it discourage house sparrows? Any advice would help. Thanks!
I don’t feed millet or corn. I only feed black oil sunflower seed. I can’t afford to feed safflower because it is very expensive. I would feed safflower because I read that it keeps sparrows away. But, I read that safflower is not liked by that many birds.

Where do you live? House sparrows are in decline in the UK/Ireland so should be encouraged. We have a pair this year, lovely to see them. Any table or ground feed that is mainly wheat will encourage them so if you don’t want them buy a food that doesn’t contain much wheat.
Try using plastic tube feeders with black sunflower seeds or special feeder mix (more expensive though), simple mesh peanut feeders are great for lots of bird species.
