Cockatiels at the Isle of Wight Zoo

The cockatiels and rosellas at the zoo live together in an aviary that is both too small for the number of birds in it and inadequate for their needs. The aviary is octagonal, and visitors are able to walk all around it, so the birds have no corners or private places they can go to when they needed privacy. As they are prey animals, cockatiels need places they can feel safe and secure, something this aviary does not have.
Needless to say, the birds were not in top condition, and several had plucking problems, a sign of either physical illness or psychological stress.
