Question by Jeffery Smith: Can the wild birds in my backyard get fat off all the seed I give them?
I have several birds that must live in the trees in my backyard, as I see them nearly all day long eating birdseed that I leave out for them. I have mourning doves, blue jays, mockingbirds, cardinals, grackles, and the occasional crow. They must go through half a pound of birdseed every day – they are hungry birdies! My question is can they eat so much birdseed that they will get fat, and possible affect their health?

Can gain surplus weight. More importantly, they require diversity in diet for proper nutritional sustenance. In my case, been at it long enough to have recognized too much was being given. That I needed to cut back to what is supplemental, rather than what was primary food source. Not sure what mixture you’re using, so it’s difficult to relate to volume and traffic. You could try with less, divided into a morning and late afternoon rations. During the interim, birds will be forced to forage, but you’ll still be there as a supplement, and a life guard to a lesser extant. Will take experimentation.
