Parrot Rescue I have a question for people that help in parrot rescue?

Question by Amanda: I have a question for people that help in parrot rescue?
I was wondering if most of the birds handed over were big parrots such as Macaws, African Grey etc. Is it uncommon for you to have small parrots budgie, cocktail, and conures handed over? Also, do alot of these birds outlive the owner or is it more common because of noise or behaviour.

Smaller parrots are commonly surrendered due to ill health or the death of the owner, but are also given up by people who realize that they haven’t got the time to provide the right home environment for them. Finding “used” small parrots a new permanent home is sometimes harder than finding a home for a larger parrot.

Unfortunately, most people looking to rehome a larger parrot will attempt to sell them online or through the local paper. They don’t necessarily screen the buyers the way they should. It’s sad when the big birds end up on the “revolving door” circuit and end up being passed on from home to home. When they are surrendered to a rescue, the new homes must prove that they know what they are getting themselves into with screening, questions, and a home visit. It’s so important to get them into the right environment.
