Parrot For Sale Q&A: How can I make my appearance more subtly piratical?

Question by Jo: How can I make my appearance more subtly piratical?
I’ve recently become fixated on the challenge of insinuating that I am a pirate through the use of inconspicuous accessories and other fashion choices. I’m a long-time bandana-wearer, but this goal didn’t present itself to me until I found and started wearing a small silver hoop earring. Now, though, I’m stumped for ideas. What else could I incorporate into my wardrobe that wouldn’t be too obvious? I found a pair of parrot earrings at a yard sale and I thought about swapping out the hoop for one of them, but — again — too noticeable.
Any ideas?

Traditionally, the pirate’s single earring is gold, and fairly heavy gage. (The point was that, if you died penniless in a foreign land, they would take the earring and give you a proper burial…)

Peasant or poet shirts are piratical, and also somewhat in fashion. Leather or rope sandals. Sashes. The habit of wearing many rings at the same time. (especially if they look old-fashioned.) So is clashing necklaces.

Real pirate wore wide belts (It was a sailor thing – the wide belt was like a weight belt, and kept you from hurting yourself when doing heavy lifting or hauling on ropes)

Long hair in a shaggy style would help, too.

Also a coat with a lot of buttons. one of my friends has a coat that she got a Burlington’s, and I think “pirate” every time I see it on her. (I told her and she’s thrilled…) Check out pirate movies if you want to nail the look.

I have a silk scarf with an African pattern that i wear when I want ot feel pirate-y. I pretent that I stole it in a far-off land. In fact, ethnic clothes,or bits of ethnic clothes (Indian, African, Asian) worn with regualr clothes give you an exotic, pirate-y feel. Real pirates wore that stuff.
