Question by Jeffery Smith: What happens to bodies of wild birds when they die?
I’ve lived in my house for over 10 years. We have dozens of birds that seem to reside in the trees in our yard. Yet only once have I ever seen the body of a dead bird, and it was a baby bird. What happens to the bodies of all these wild birds when they get old and die? I never see them – do their bodies just stay up in the trees, and insects eat the bodies? Or do the birds have a special place they go to die?

They are disposed of fairly quickly. Crows are not too fussy about what they eat and will take care of a freshly dead bird. Also, believe it or not, slugs can eat a bird in a couple of days. I have seen dead birds in my back garden being eaten by slugs. There is nothing left when they have finished, except bones and a few feathers. Nature has perfect ways of recycling everything.
