Question by George S: Is a good idea getting a 1 year old amazon parrot?
Im thinking of buying an amazon parrot i saw one in a pet shop the other day but the only problem is that the bird is a year old so im worried that it wont be easy to handle?!?
On the other hand would this make the bird more independent (easygoing) as it hasn’t had allot of attention at pet shop?
All answers will be appreciated!

Do not buy an Amazon Parrot until you have done a lot of research on them. These birds can be difficult to handle and aggressive, destructive due to their need to chew, very loud and messy. They require a lot of handling and communication, toys that they can manipulate, time out of their cage, so they require more care than dogs and cats, plus they can live up to 50 years.
When I first met the woman who would be my sister in law she had a blue front amazon that her first husband had bought her, Spanky. Well Spanky was a noisy, nasty bird. If he was out of his cage when someone came in, he had to be put in the cage because he would walk around the house (yes walk, not fly) and would bite people. Putting him away always meant that she was getting bitten and then he would scream so loud you couldn’t hold a conversation.
If he was in his cage when someone came in, he was quiet, but OMG when they fixed dinner, Spanky always got some of whatever they cooked, and you couldn’t eat in peace until Spanky got some. His screaming started as soon as the cooking started, so sometimes it was an hour or more that we got to listen to the screaming. And I don’t know how many end tables, picture frames etc he destroyed by chewing on them.
These are NOT birds for the novice owner. My daughter worked at a Petsmart for a year and they had an Amazon there that she bonded with and wanted to buy, but I refused to let her bring it to my home (where she was living) because of my Spanky experience.
