Esta Jina albergaba docenas y docenas de ciguitas y otras aves medianas y grandes y cientos de abejas, hormigas y otros insectos. La cigüita de la foto salió por pura casualidad, ni siquiera podía verlas entre las ramas, mucho menos fotografiarlas. Pero es nada menos que nuestra ave nacional, la Dulus dominicus, mejor conocida como Cigua Palmera –endémica, como debe ser un Ave Nacional. Los insectos andaban detrás de las flores, de abundante miel (incluyendo las hormigas que casi me comen un pie cuando descuidadamente me paré en un hormiguero a disparar hacia arriba) y las aves se dan un banquete cada mañana con las semillas, recubiertas de una membrana blanca agridulce. De ahí el gran bullicio y reperpero matutino.

This Jina (Madras Thorn) housed dozens and dozens of cigüitas (Palmchat, the only species in the genus Dulus and the family Dulidae) and other medium and large sized birds and hundreds of bees, ants and other insects. The cigüita of the picture came by pure chance, I could not even see the birds through the branches, much less shoot them. But this bird is nothing less than our National Bird, the Dulus dominicus, better known as Cigua Palmera -an endemic species, as a National Bird is suppossed to be. The insects were after the flowers, lush honey (including ants that almost eat my foot when I carelessly stepped on their anthill to shoot up). The birds are given a banquet every morning with the seeds, covered with a white sour-sweet membrane. Hence the huge morning hustle and buzz.
