I have a male indian ringneck parrot and would like to get a companion for him. i am not interested in breeding. would a female or male be more suitable

Get him a girl. He will love you for it. You might be out of the picture, but you might learn a different side to your parrot behavior.
I think that people who want to get companions for their parrot should always get the opposite sex. 
It is good to have a real pair of parrots.
