Cornell Birds How do worm-eating birds identify a specific piece of earth containing worms?

Question by Sandman: How do worm-eating birds identify a specific piece of earth containing worms?
I have noticed that birds, within a few pecks into the ground, can bring up a worm. I cannot believe this is because there are that many worms in the ground such that it is a chance occurrence. So how do they know where the worms are?
