Question by Keith: What is a good bird food/blend/brand of bird food for northeast birds?
The $ 5 bag ofbasic bird food I’ve been getting from Lowes attracts only a few very common birds(cardinals, blue jays and such), what type of food could I use to attract some more rare birds, even a finch or 2 would be nice. Any suggestions.

Goldfinches love thistle seed, and they are just arriving in the Northeast right now. Get some thistle and you’ll be very happy with the results. Even better, squirrels don’t care for it very much. They’ll eat anything if they are hungry enough, of course, but they’d rather not have thistle.
BTW, the best way to get goldfinches to come to your feeder is with a special finch feeder. They can hang upside down to eat, while most birds can’t and squirrels usually won’t bother trying. So finch feeders can be very efficient, since you get mostly finches rather than the less interesting varieties. (The feeders are not very expensive.)
