Not exactly a "keeper," but the angle of this photo of a Turkey Vulture along the Scioto River north of Griggs Dam, Columbus OH, happened to show an interesting feature of the bird.
The Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s Birds of North America entry on the Turkey Vulture says:
"Turkey Vulture has excellent sense of smell, and uses both sight and smell. Olfactory organs unusually well developed for a bird; relative size of brain's olfactory bulb is ninth largest of 108 avian species. Has larger nares ['nostrils'], olfactory chamber, and olfactory bulb than do condors, King Vulture, and Black Vulture. … The odorants that are used as cues [for locating carrion] are unclear, although positive result for ethyl mercaptan in Stager's (1964) experiments; natural-gas companies introduced this odorant into pipelines and discovered leaks where Turkey Vultures were found circling or on ground."
