Bird Identification Where do you get those bands for pet birds?

Question by Tammy848: Where do you get those bands for pet birds?
You know the little ring on the birds foot?
What is that for?
And where do you get them?
I’m getting a hand tamed male cockatile on Saturday and I want one for him if nessasary

I don’t know where you get them, but they have to be put on right after they hatch while the bones are still soft and squishy. They have to bend the toes all wrong to get them on, and it will break the foot if it’s done after the bird is a few weeks old.

Chances are he has one already. It’s how the breeder tells what year they were born, to what parents, if it’s male or female, and any other I.D. the breeder wants it to have. Each band means something different to each breeder. There really is no “standard”.

It’s not necessary for them to have bands. In fact, in the long run, it’s best if they don’t. It can cause infections from rubbing on the skin all the time.
