Question by Bob K: How can I get my parakeets and cockatiel to get along?
I just got an 8 week old cockatiel yesterday. She’s great, but my parakeets are attacking her. What can I do to help them get along? They’re in seperate cages right now.

First of all, your cockatiel should be in quarantine away from your other birds. This helps to make sure that the tiel doesn’t share any illnesses or parasites with your parakeets. Quaratine should last for approximately 60 days during which a healthy vet visit should be done. Quarantine is an excellent time to bond with your new birdie and create a lifelong relationship…..don’t skip this step or you might be disappointed with the bond you form.
Next, at 8 weeks, she is a very very young baby and should be monitored closely to make sure she doesn’t regress and require hand feedings. A gram scale (available at Walmart) should be used daily to monitor her weight and make sure she is eating properly. If she is making a static-y type cry, she’s hungry and needs to be fed.
Budgies and tiels are competitors in their native land often competing for the same food sources. They don’t usually get along well at all. Surprisingly, it isn’t the laid back tiels that are the aggressor, but rather those little guys. My budgies think nothing of booting my tiels out of their cages and taking over, which is why when they are out of their cages together, I must be present at all times to break up any aggressive moves.
