African Grey Parrots For Sale Q&A: How SHOULD pet birds be produced/ how to end parrot neglect and abuse?

Question by Dani: How SHOULD pet birds be produced/ how to end parrot neglect and abuse?
Please feel free to give me your whole opinion, I want as many viewpoints as possible! (I am doing “real research” elsewhere, but I need some general opinions and the more the better!)

Ideally, do you think pet birds should be produced/sold as they are? Do you have any ideas as to how to best put an end to the thousands upon thousands of abused and neglected pet birds? Should large scale breeders be banned? Small scale breeders? Pet stores? Should certain sources be promoted over others? Should birds be kept as pets at all? Why or why not? How would your solution benefit the birds already here, and/or protect those to come?

Do you own a bird? Where did you get it? Would you choose the same or different now? WHO is to blame for the suffering? Please keep in mind that most pet birds sold in the USA are now captive-bred. Most parrots are no longer imported.

Maybe a exotic pet course that focuses on parrots should be take by people interested in big parrots such as Macaws, cockatoos, African Greys, etc. In the course let them learn about the birds and also learn to take care of the birds (let them do hands on such as watering, feeding, cage cleaning etc). They can also learn how to handle the birds. I think this would lower impulse buying when they learn he info and are close up to these birds. They would then see it is a big commitment. While not every pet store sales large parrots I think only pet stores that specialize in birds should sell them at all. I personally don’t like regular pet stores selling medium parrots, conures, cockatiels and smaller parrots if they don’t know how to care for them and will not socialize them.

I own a green cheek conure and as a child had a cockatiel, conure, and budgie. My best birds came from a breed (green cheek conure), or a small ma and pap pet store (cocktiel). The cocktiel was a tame sweet bird. Craigsist can either be good or a bad way to buy a bird. If you find a person with a healthy, social bird that can answer questions then you should be fine.
