Goldfinch Can European Goldfinches be kept by themselves or do they need a partner?

Question by Elvi M: Can European Goldfinches be kept by themselves or do they need a partner?
I had a European Goldfinch pair but the female died. It will take about 3 weeks before I can get another one. Will my male finch be ok without a partner. What can I do to keep him entertained until his new partner arrives. Or will he also die due to loneliness?

Keep your finch near you while you watch television, and especially bring him into the eating routine. It means a lot to birds to be eaten with. It’s something they do together, as a flock, so it comforts them because it’s familiar. Speak softly to him, play a radio or television for him while you’re gone.

A parakeet mirror from Wal-Mart or somewhere similar only costs around 1.00 … Take it out once his mate arrives. I can’t promise it won’t inspire jealousy then.

Keep him away from smoke, and anywhere that teflon is being used (non-stick pans, some space heaters and stove linings, some toasters) because he’s small, and teflon fumes are toxic. That means you may want to wait a few minutes between finishing the food and inviting birdie anywhere near the room.

You must be a very good bird owner to think of how lonely he’s going to be. Lots of people don’t understand how much birds need each other.
