Bird Of Paradise How do I replant a bird of paradise plant?

Question by Jennifer B: How do I replant a bird of paradise plant?
I have a bird of paradise plant on the side of my home that gave me a bloom 1 tine in 7 years but will not bloom at all anymore, my question is how do I replant my bird of paradise plant to another part of my yard or could I put a piece of it in a pot for indoor use. The roots are very strong at this point.

Do not transplant the bird of paradise until the threat of frost passes.

Water the bird of paradise the day before you transplant it to make the soil easier to work and cause less stress on the plant.
Use shovel or garden fork and dig at least 6 to 8 inches from the plant, and then loosen the dirt until the plant lifts from the ground with the roots intact. Carefully dig around the bird of paradise trying to avoid cutting the roots.
Move the plant to a spot where the plant will have direct morning sunlight, and protection from direct afternoon sun. Dig a hole slightly deeper than the plant’s root ball, and make it wide wide enough that you can easily spread out the roots. Gently place the plant in hole and fill. Be sure to tamp the soil down to eliminate any air pockets. Continue to keep the soil moist to help the plant get re-established, but avoid over watering or soggy soil. Add about 3 inches of mulch to the base of the plant to help keep in moisture.

You could try to plant a bit in a container, but it needs a lot of sunlight, so be sure it is in a sunny location.
