Thistle Bird Seed Why did the seed in my bird feeders go bad?

Question by : Why did the seed in my bird feeders go bad?
Two weeks ago, I bought three bird feeders and put them in my back yard. Watching the birds, I noticed that while one feeder (made of wire with sunflower seeds inside) was very popular, the birds basically ignored the other two (both plastic tubes, one large with mixed seed and one finch-sized with thistle seed). The sunflower seed feeder was almost empty today, so I went outside to refill it and I figured I would just dump out the seed from my other two feeders and refill to see if the birds would be tempted by fresh seed.
To my surprise, the seed in the bottom half of the big tube feeder has all sprouted inside of the feeder, and it had congealed into a big nasty mess that I could not clean out. Worse yet, the thistle seed was moldy and full of what I think were maggots (I didn’t care to look too closely). Both feeders are in the trash now.
What went wrong? I live in an area that is very humid for much of the year; does that cause excessive moisture to build up inside the plastic tubes? Should I only use the wire type feeders?
