No, I haven’t acquired any new birds lately, although if I were single and had a few extra bucks at hand, at least one of these would probably have come home with me this afternoon. Earlier in the day, Spoots had been startled by something and flew off into the living room, which let me know it was time to get his wings clipped again. I took him over to The Bird House shortly before its closing time, and contrary to my usual practice, I didn’t take my camera with me. (It usually accompanies me nearly everywhere I go.) As a consequence of that decision, I nearly missed a splendid photo opportunity because this conure and lovebird quickly perched on the Spooter’s cage and stayed there as if they owned it. I observed them with interest and amusement, but at the same time cursed myself for having made the rare decision to leave my camera at home. The owner offered to have her son take pictures of them with his camera phone and e-mail them to me, but after a brief discussion, we decided to leave Spoots there for his grooming while I hurried home to grab my camera and SB-600 speedlight. (I ended up not using the speedlight.)

After returning to The Bird Store, I took nearly 50 pictures of the birds in various combinations. The lovebird’s name is Diego, and the conure’s is Skittles. Spoots never left his cage the whole time he was there, even though its door was open, but Diego climbed inside and made himself right at home, remaining there for perhaps ten minutes. He and Spoots got along just fine. Skittles mostly remained where he was, atop the cage. A Mexican gentleman who was there with his kids was trying to decide whether to buy Skittles, but said he had to go home first and discuss the matter with his wife; but aside from that consideration and the fact that I am neither single nor wealthy, both of these birds might well have gone home with me today. I love birds in general and am quite fond of lovebirds and conures, the latter of which are among the world’s most beautiful birds. They’re a bit expensive, too; Skittles was on sale for 9, and conures often cost much more than that.
