Finch Bird Feeders Q&A: What kind of food do you put in finch feeders?

Question by grylled_bear: What kind of food do you put in finch feeders?
I got my grandpa a finch feeder for Father’s Day, and he wants to know what kind of seed to put in it. He has a basic wild bird seed mix and black oil sunflower seeds for his main bird feeder. Are these ok, or do finches eat something specific?

Yes, they eat specific feed. “Thistle” seed is what you want to get. It is small, long and black. You can pick it up anywhere you get bird seed. If the feeder has numerous feeding stations with perches and the openings are small and elongated, then this is a goldfinch feeder and thistle seed should be on the menu! Another thing, is the fact that only thistle seed will fit through the openings at each feeding station.. Hope this answers your question.
