My budgie has been scratching his eye since 2-3 days. At first i thought he will be fine. But he is continously scratching his one eye. I called the vet. He says come day after tomorrow. But i had to do something. He had scratched the side around his eyes badly, eye lid had a drop of blood and was red. All i did was wash it with warm water. And quickly put the genteal gel drop. Meanwhile he felt comforted and closed his eye. Then i wiped the surrounding with pyodine. Till now he is not scratching and sleeping peacefully without rubbing his eye. Hopefully he remains like that even in morning. Is it right. I also heard that this medicine is for dry eyes. But i didnt have much time to think. Perhaps he also has dry eyes. Do you think the drops are fine. The budgie feels comforted.

There are many things that could be the problem – like something in the eye- you may want to look with a flashlight to check. You did good because a dry eye formula is good to lubricate a birds eye or rinse it- as long as it does not have that get the red out stuff- any cheap dry eye drops is fine. But do not think that you no longer need to see the vet because the basic reason and damage that caused the scratching is still there. Especially since you saw blood. A scratched cornea or damage to the eyelids or some infection should be checked out by a vet- better safe than sorry when something could lead to permanent eye damage or blindness. It is good that your budgie feels good and is resting because stress can weaken its immune system and let other problems crop up. All of us carry diseases that are dormant or are in balance because of our immune system- but stress can let them overwhelm our normal immune system and cause major problems. I would be good for you to increase the dark green and orange vegetables and fruits for a short time to strengthen the immune system.
