Question by Alan B: Thistle for North Carolina Birds???
We recently added a thistle feeder to our other feeder, but after a couple of weeks no birds have touched it. With our other feeders, the birds started feeding within a few days.
I’m wondering if the problem is the thistle seed we filled the new one with. The ad suggests this.
Does anyone have any experience w/thistle seed for N.C. birds?
Thanks for any advice!
Alan

I don’t think it matters what kind of bird it is. I was feeding lessor goldfinches from a tube feeder. I had up to 30 at a time. When the thistle ran out I bought a new bag. All of a sudden they would not touch it. I dumped it and washed the feeder and as I was filling it I noticed the smell of the thistle. I don’t know if thistle can go rancid but it sure smelled that way. I bought another bag and it smelled the same. Possibly the stock at the store was old. You might try buying from a different store and trying again. Maybe the birds dietary needs have changed with the season. Me, I just started feeding my goldfinches cracked sunflower seed. I don’t get as many but the ones who come enjoy it.
