Question by Mocha: Cockatiel or parakeet?
Well in a little while I am going to obtain a bird or two. I am
torn between two species. The cockatiel or the parakeet. I want
a bird that has a lot of personality, can be taught to sing amd
dance (talk is optional) and is just full of fun. Not too noisy,
and easy to handle. Which bird is right for me, the cockatiel or the
Parakeet?
Also,
- which is bigger
- which will be happy with other birds in the same cage
- which bird will be just more fun overall?

The Cockatiel is bigger then the parakeet, but small compared to a parrot. Parakeets are small birds. I think Cockatiels have more personality then a parakeet, but they are very noising, especially males. I read that the females are not as noising as the males. Cockatiels can say a few words and mimic sounds they hear. They are not as good as a talking parrot. I have two male Cockatiels. And they do different kinds of whistles and they know how to say what a pretty bird. My youngest male can mimic the phone. Cockatiels can be fun to have, but they are a lot of work. And it takes time for them to gain your trust. They are not easy pets and yes they are very messy, but all birds are. Maybe to start with a parakeet would be best for you if you had never owned a bird before. And a parakeet at the pet store is cheaper then a Cockatiel.
