Bird Feeder Bird feeder question?!?

Question by josephusjosephus: Bird feeder question?!?
I have a few questions about bird feeders that I would like to get answers to. I have read that the bird feeders should not be placed near windows for the birds’ safety. What other places should and/or shouldn’t a bird feeder be placed (bushes, trees, fences, etc)? I’ve heard hummingbird feeders are normally colored red to attract hummingbirds. Second question: are there specific colors a bird feeder should be painted to attract birds?? Any other info I may need to questions I did not think of to ask would be greatly appreciated. The bird supply aisle had a lot of this one particular “wild bird food” had on the packaging “colorful bird blend.” So, that’s what I bought.
Currently, it’s on a shepherd’s hook that sways a little bit which makes me think birds will not be inclined to use it. Should I abandon the hook and go for a more solid pole mount.

Colorful bird blend sounds like a mixture of different wildbird seed which will attract a wide variety of birds. To attract many different species of wildbirds, put out a platform feeder with your wildbird seed mix or black oil sunflower seeds. Place the feeder close to bushes or trees for wildbirds to easily escape from predators. Keep a birdbath or shallow dish filled with water close to the food.

Also, put out some fruit for the wildbirds to eat. Many wildbirds enjoy apples, oranges, grapes, bananas, and berries.

Suet feeders are also good to hang from trees. It’s a favorite food of many birds including woodpeckers, nuthatches, chickadees, and titmice. You can place the suet in a mesh bag or a hanging cage. Suet is a good source of energy for wildbirds.

In addition, you can hang tube feeders from trees filled with sunflower seeds. Hang the feeder at least five feet off the ground to get the most birds to visit. Goldfinches, chickadees, siskins, and purple and house finches enjoy eating sunflower seeds from tube feeders.

Happy bird feeding and watching!
