Question by Chloe: How long does it generally take for birds to find a new bird feeder?
We live in a rural wooded area that is full of Chickadees, Nuthatches, Grossbeaks, Cardinals, and so forth in southwestern Michigan. We decided to just put up 2 small bird feeders w/ black oil sunflower seed. It’s been several days and we still haven’t seen any birds. It is about 25 degrees out and has been lightly snowing the past few days. How long does it usually take for them to find the feeders? THANKS~

It doesn’t usually take them long to find the birdfeeders. You’ll attract more of them if you put out a variety of food. In addition, to black oil sunflower seeds, safflower seed is also a favorite of many of the birds you mentioned. It is high in fat and will help give the wildbirds the extra energy they need during the winter. Hulled peanuts and peanut butter are great sources of protein and fat, as well. Also, if you have a heated birdbath, keep it near the food source. Wildbirds need to drink water in the winter to stay hydrated.
