Yes, 13,000 years ago, a small comet fell to earth in North America, ending the last ice age abruptly, and probably caused the extinction of the mammalian megafauna. Gone are all the large mammals, like the mammoth, mastodon, saber-toothed cat, short-faced bear, giant ground sloth, North American subspecies of the lion (the biggest subspecies known), and even camels and horses. Since large mammals have proportionally small body surfaces, and since large mammals cannot hide in underground burrows, they have nowhere to run or hide if the environment gets too warm all of a sudden. Since human beings evolved about 150,000 years ago from an African population of Homo erectus, the extinction of the end of the last ice age was witnessed by human beings who were here in the New World.
