Birds at the feeders in our backyard. Those are goldfinches on the thistle-seed feeder on the left, and house sparrows on the other two. Feeding birds in San Francisco is tricky — pigeons can learn to defeat most tricks employed to keep them off the feeders, and they’re disruptive to the small birds. Currently we have a compromise — the pigeons eat the food dropped by the other birds but don’t usually touch the feeders. We have not yet worked out a solution to the squirrel. The shot is blurry; it was overcast and rainy that day, and birds don’t hold still for cameras.

Bells and whistles… go together like a goldfinch and thistles. Common as they are on the prairie, I never tire of seeing, hearing and photographing goldfinches around and above me. This is their peak season, as the thistle begins to go to seed, providing them both food and shelter. Other birds have nearly finished their breeding and are hiding away to molt, but the goldfinches are eating the seeds and gathering the down of the thistles for their nests. One of the few bird species to feed their young no insects, they engorge the thistle seeds and nourish their young with a protein-rich "milk" that is secreted from their stomach linings. Got out early yesterday morning at Nelson Lake Marsh/Dick Young Forest Preserve in Kane County, Illinois. Visit blog.rosyfinch.com
