Question by Brianne: How do I keep Starlings and other pesky birds out of my bird feeders?
Please don’t get me wrong, I know they are birds like all the others and I don’t have anything against them and they are useful but I can’t afford to have them clean out my bird feeders in two days time. I have nothing against them eating what is on the ground. Right now I can’t afford to change my feeders but in the future I will. Thank-you.

Go out and give them a stern lecture and explain to them that you don’t want them eating the food you bought for other birds. If that fails post a sign by the feeder outlining the rules and letting them know that you are watching them, and they can only have the seeds that hit the ground and that any infraction of the rules will be dealt with swiftly and they will then loose their ground seed picking up privileges.
Okay seriously , I have cardinals, blue jays and starlings coming to my feeders and you can’t tell those that want and those that you don’t want to come or go. The only way you can truly stop them is to take down the feeder.
Or you can put a bit of food in the feeder throughout the day. You may find that different birds come at different times. The Blue Jays come in the morning here so I put out peanuts then, the starlings come in the afternoon and the cardinals come in the evening. See if you can see a pattern of when they come to feed and you can gear your feeding patterns to that. Birds are creatures of habits.
