pet birds

FROM ABCBIRDS.COM
There are more than 90 million pet cats in the U.S., the majority of which roam outside at least part of the time. In addition, millions of stray and feral cats roam our cities, suburbs, and rural areas. Scientists estimate that free-roaming cats kill hundreds of millions of birds, small mammals, reptiles and amphibians each year. Cat predation is an added stress to wildlife populations already struggling to survive habitat loss, pollution, pesticides, and other human impacts … Free-roaming cats are also exposed to injury, disease, parasites, getting hit by cars, or becoming lost, stolen, or poisoned.

Bird Feeding After a bad storm,We found two baby robbins what should we feed them?

Question by Bow H: After a bad storm,We found two baby robbins what should we feed them?
The robbins nest is two high so we have them in a box,The mother bird feeds them all day long ,Then we have been giving them worms. The sit on my lap when ever I am sitting on the porch, and they get very upset if I do not give them attention .Will they learn to fly on there own ?I hope so my experianc with flying is some what limited.

Best answer:

Answer by Kurarinetto
If you have the box, put it in a high place for the mother and leave it. If she is still feeding the babies, she will continue to. do so after you leave them. If the mother bird is nowhere to be found (after observation from a distance), then look up a bird rescue in your area, or wildlife rehabilitator.
Do NOT attempt to raise the babies. Chances are they will not be given proper nutrition and care, or the lessons they will need to survive.

Parrot For Sale Where is the best place to buy a Bird Cage on line for my 12 Week old African Gray Congo?

Question by Anita W: Where is the best place to buy a Bird Cage on line for my 12 Week old African Gray Congo?
I will get Marvin Sept 1, 2008 And I want some help with the kind of cage to buy. And the best place to buy one at.
I also wanted to know if anyone has ever tried the flight vest they have for sale with the poop pouch on it. I saw them on line at Dr. Foster Smith.
Can anyone help me & Marvin get started out one the right foot?
Thank you!

Best answer:

Answer by Owlwoman
King’s cages and Island cages are both good choices. You might save on shipping by buying from a dealer in your area.

I have used a harness to fly a parrot before but we flew outdoors so no need for a poop pouch. Do read Birds for Dummies and google Nurturing Dominance and read all Sally Blanchard has to say. Personally I trim my Grey’s flight feathers (he flew a block away once) and he is happy to fly around the bird room now. Sally also has a great book called Companion Parrot Handbook – a must have.

Congrats on your new baby…..

A near-miss kind of nature shot: a daddy American goldfinch is feeding thistle seed from our feeders to a bird that is either a female or a young bird (if anyone else can tell, let me know). I would guess it’s a baby that’s been fed, but maybe there is some kind of mating/nesting behavior that involves feeding. Dunno. But that one pesky melaleuca branch is in the way of this being truly a good photo. I might try serious Photoshop surgery here.

The Squirrel From HELL

This guy is vey rude. He eats the fruit off our fruit trees and steals the bird seed from the bird feeder. I don’t know how he gets into the bird feeder since we have moved it into the middle of the yard away from fences and trees. It is high on a metal pole so he can’t grip it with his claws. He must be Rocky J. Squirrel’s cousin cause he can fly that high. Grrrrrrrr go away you piggy squirrel.

Baby Birds How can i release a baby bird safetly?

Question by Mimsterrr: How can i release a baby bird safetly?
I have a baby bird that has most of his feathers and is trying very hard to fly. I found him just yesterday at a park on the floor so i took him in. He cannot fly or perch. He crawls a lot and flaps his wings untill hes out of breath.
Should i return him where i found him or keep him in my care until he learns to fly?
Right now hes eating moist cat food and is in a soft box.
I feed him every hour.

Best answer:

Answer by kiwi.baby
Do you have any animal rehabs or emergency vets that take in wild birds? That would be the best bet for that lil guy. Call your local animal shelter and let them know what you have and they should be able to help guide you in the right direction.
Good luck!

Birdfeeder My backyard bird feeders are only attracting sparrows?

Question by Andrea: My backyard bird feeders are only attracting sparrows?
I fill my birdfeeder every day with a basic seed mix for wild birds. All I am getting is sparrows and an occasional cardinal. No chickadees, no titmice, no nuthatches, etc. I can hear them so I know they’re out there. Are there any tricks to getting rid of these hungry sparrows so that the other songbirds can get some food?

Thanks for you help.

Best answer:

Answer by Kevin
They all like a different type of food and some even prefer certain bird feeder placements. The sparrows will mostly eat food off of the ground that you either put there or has fallen there out of the feeder due to the cardinals or squirrels. Chickadees normally fly in and fly out very quickly, but if they aren’t coming I am not sure why, they normally eat the same food as the sparrows. Titmice and nuthatches love peanuts and suet, along with woodpeckers. They most likely will not visit a mixture of corn and sunflower seeds. Also, make sure your bird feeder is close enough to a sheltered area that the birds feel comfortable getting the food. I can guarantee you that the sparrows are not scaring away the other birds, so there is no need to try deterring them from your feeder. I hope this helps!

Cockatiels Q&A: How often and how much should you feed a cockatiel at the age of four weeks each day?

Question by J.: How often and how much should you feed a cockatiel at the age of four weeks each day?
I’ve been hand feeding two cockatiels for four weeks, it appears they are having trouble digesting their food, however the temperature of the food is always between 102-105 degrees, they are in an area with a heating pad that is always 85-94 degrees, humidity above 50%. I also give them water to prevent any chance of dehydration. They also appear to be healthy, active, and gaining weight, do you think this is still a problem?
